ABF/KR comparability

Post

I've got a full KR engine sitting in my garage which is a possibility for my mk1 way in the future.

I have the chance of an ABF block for free and was just wondering if its possible to mate the two together?

I currently have a mk2 with a 6A bottom on its KR which makes it much easier to dry on a daily basis so would like a similar setup in my mk1 but I've never heard of an ABF/KR combo?

Cheers

Its compatible

Only thing different, is the block height, crank sensor and crank wheel. Oil pump is higher pressure too but that's not an issue to in a Kr.

You'll get better bottom end power with abf bottom

Cool, thanks mate.

The lower down power is what I want. I prefer the drivability of the 8v to the 16v in standard guise but with a 2.0 block on a 16v it's a whole different ball game.

if its a complete abf drop it in with abf head and cams, if bare bottom end then yeah a kr head swap right over. it'll end up about the same power as 9a/6a with kr or abf cams. only thing is the block is taller so some kr conversion manifolds dont fit properly

if you have the option of runnign abf management then I would go for that over kjet for sure

It's just the bottom end minus the sump but the kr sump will fit wont it? It's no big deal if it doesn't really.

yeah you can use the kr sump, pretty much all the parts are the same except for the oil filter housing and breather housing unless its a really late kr block

It's from a big bumper model which I think was a 91 model. I'll find out when the time comes.

Thanks for your help!

if you look at the 2 oil filter housings you'll soon notice the difference, top bolt is offset on later blocks plus the breather is metal on early kr and plastic on later ones (canrt remember if the breather switch happened same time as oil filter housing ot before tho!)
