Mk1 GTI gearbox and clutch options in ABF engine conversion

I'm currently in the slow process of putting an ABF engine in my GTI Cabby.
I have both the original gearbox and the gearbox which came with the ABF engine (sorry but I get confused with the codes ;).
I have read that I can use my original gearbox and keep the rod gear linkage. I am thinking of doing this as it is going to be easier and cheaper.
I have also read that the best option for this set up is to use a Mk1 clutch friction plate with a Mk2 16v pressure plate. Has anyone any experience with this setup?
Or would an uprated Mk1 friction plate and pressure plate work ok?
I'm not going to tune up the ABF engine, I've just had the head rebuilt and are tidying up the standard engine.

Many thanks

From memory and its not what it used to be, cannot use mk2 16v plate as it dosnt fit the 8v gearbox splines, think best option is uprated mk1 clutch assy. Also if you use original box the abf flywheel has good value to sell on.

Cheers abfmk1.
I read that the mk2 16v friction plate doesn't fit due to the spines but the pressure plate off a mk2 16v can be used with a mk1 friction plate? I don't know it's just what I read in a conversion guide.
Using a mk1 clutch kit will be easier as I don't have to buy 2 kits to make the set up.
Good point about selling on the fly wheel, I think I'm going to have loads of bits left over as I brought the complete ABF setup including mk3 loom, dials, steering shell with column, exhaust etc which won't be used plus all the old bits from the original mk1 set up. Once the car is running it will be time for a big sort out.

Cheers

OEM VW 16v pp is stronger than 8v, but aftermarket kits use the same PP regardless. so use a mk1/2 8v 1.8 clutch kit to match the box, plus your old flywheel :)
