As I am going to be forking out for a nice new hood, if someone were to slash a hole in it is malicious damage something that is covered by any fully comp. policy?

That's a toughie - depends on insurer. Some class that as vandalism which isn't covered. if it was damage caused whilst someone was committing theft from or theft of the car you would possibly get paid out then.

I think some insuraers cover vandalism =? but youll have to pay excess and your premium will rise as i assume it happened on your drive so it will be considered a higher risk while left at home.
Do the sums it might be worth replacing the roof and not bothering with insurance.
All the best with fixing it. How bad is the damage. Let us know how yu get on.

It would be cheaper to fix the roof yourself and not make a claim. I was a victim of vandalism 8 years ago, when someone decided to cover my mk4 20V T in paint stripper, I had to claim and I'm still paying for it now. My advice for any sort of vandalism would be to repair it yourself or pay someone to do it for you.
