topping up gearbox oil? GF 1.3

Post

Just did an oil change a couple of days ago and thought the gearbox oil had probably never been looked at.

I'm really not sure where to check level or where to top up, can you give any advice please?

Ideally I would like to change it.

Thanks

If I remember right there is a 17mm allen key drain bung on the gearbox just under the passenger side driveshaft, taking this out will drain the oil and then to top it up again there is another 17mm allen key bung above the same driveshaft. Fill it up until the oil starts to trickle out of the hole and job done! Not many people have a 17mm allen key so what I did was to buy a bag of these, http://www.toolstation.com/m/part.html?p=87601
I cant remember if it was M10 or M12 I got but they will let you have a look at the shop and buy the ones that a 17mm spanner fits on,
Then tap this into the bung and undo with a 17mm spanner! They can be tight but once you crack them off its easy peasy
I hope this helps?

Well I do it until it just starts to dribble out of the fill hole. Mr Haynes says fill it with 2.2 litres.
As for the oil I'm not 100% sure but again Mr Haynes has the answer, he says SAE 80 or 80W/90 hypoid gear oil. Its not too bad a job so have fun.

I'm going to try this with my driver as I changed the reverse switch in the gearbox and the oil that came out was nasty, also it will give me something to do over xmas!

I found 5 litres of comma gear oil on amazon for about 15 posted, and goly gave me a good tip about filling the oil in the top hole with some hose on the end of a funnel.

I know the oil in mine will not have been changed, its bound to be waaaaay past its best.
