Thermostat housing/ Coolant flange

Post

Hi guys,

nearly got the old girl doing, other than an intermittent starting issue which I may have solved, my thermostat housing is leaking where it joins to the coolant flange for the top water hose. It only drips when under pressure so its not a blatant hole, just an issue with the seal on the join.

The thermostat came with 2 paper seals, none of which fit, currently all I have on it is the O ring behind the thermostat, then a bit of blue sealant on the join, and its leaking quite bad. I know these flanges are obsolete, but luckily there doesn't seem to be much up with it! I have found a gasket on VW heritage which looks like the one for the job, anyone shed any light on this or tell me what I need to do to stop it leaking?

Cheers!

That should do fine. Clean both surfaces really well using some steel wool until both block and flange faces are nice & shiney then apply a small smear of gasket sealant, spread with your finger and place gasket on top. Do the same with the other surface and don't overtighten it when doing up.

All sorted, took the coolant flange off and the gasket had been pinched in the join, put a new O ring in there and jobs a good'n. didn't need a paper gasket luckily.
