Yes indeed, no offence meant just all cars had manul chokes when I was learning to drive….
Assuming everything else is OK with engine, timing Ok, points setup OK, clean fuel and air filters, plugs 'n leads OK, newish rotor arm 'n cap you can try and speed up the tickover a bit.
From memory if you stand infront of car looking at the carb from the right hand side. You should be able to see a large-ish straight slot screw in a sort of recessed hole. Turning this decreses or increses the idle speed.
Be warned though, messing with the carb before the ignition is sorted can cause more problems 8O

pmd you with what i would try max, all that i can think of is in your inbox, to be honest the first thing i would try is get the timing set up, the dizzy cap is new and rotor arm is and fuel filter is.The plugs looked new as did the leads.Get it to your local garage and get them to do the timing first i reckon that will sort it then they can tune the carb to the timing, as in air intake screw (idling screw) and also the mixture screw. Then it will run a treat i reckon.

Try the idle screw first if you want let the car warm up and it is on the right hand side of the carb you can do it with the air cleaner on its the big slotted one in the recessed hole a smaller one below it.Clockwise will de crease revs and screwing it out (anti clockwise) will increase revs you will hear the engine change tone.Keep trying it by knocking the choke off and if it cuts out give it a bit more of a turn and so on.Do it when engine is warm though. It may work :dontknow:

When you come to a stop, put the clutch in and select first gear

Dont get mad with it, it will be something simple, just looked in the haynes manual and the most likely lookin culprit is the timing and carb set up, get it to a garage and let them set it up, whats a few quid for a lot of happiness and gaydon just round the corner.

I had a problem like that with my first polo. When I braked or slowed down in trafic it would stall. The carb gasket is rubber and there was a crack in it. When I braked the carb lent foreard, the crack got bigger letting in air and stalling the car. Not sure if golf has a similar set up but its a possibility.

it does have a rubber gasket the same as the polo if that helps.
