Replacement Gearbox

Does anyone know if a Mk3 Polo 1043cc CEL prefix gearbox will fit my 81 Golf directly, or is it not as straight forward as that  :dontknow:

I've got a 5-speed 'box off a polo of some sort on my driver, as an improvement for the old 4-speed.

The gearbox itself was a straight fit, but the mounting was custom made to fi the different bolt positions.

Yea was thinkiing about 5 speed, but decided to keep it 4 speed as i want to keep it as standard as possible. Plus ive heard that 5 speeds can make us small blocks feel a bit long legged.

Ive been told that 4 Speed to 5 Speed upgrades are quite straight forward, just slight alterations to mountings and gear selector linkages required. Small block engines were also fitted to some VW Polos  so there also contenders for good donations

Lovin the motor to Rob, really good find!! I saw this one when i was looking for mine. i think we were pretty much searching at the same time  :D

Quite right, I used to use mine as a daily driver, 20 miles of dual carriageway at 4,000rpm was a bit tedious, so the 5 speed did a nice job of lowering that down to about 3,100rpm - but in 3rd, 4th, and 5th the hearing is progressively longer than the 4 speed, so it's noticeably slower than standard - and doesn't have the same revvy yappy sweetness that it used to.

I know exactly what you mean dude!! When we brought ours back from the South-West, a solid couple of hours at 4K sounded like punishment for the poor thing, Especially when the other half asked "What IS THAT noise??" To which i responded "The engine"   id be inclined to do the same as you if the commute was higher speeds. However all my driving is local and town in the Golf so the cute 4 speed box zips around like a rocket!! Love it

Thanks. Your motor looks sweet too mate!
Is there not a 5 Speed available with similar ratios and a taller top gear?
I will be driving around 45 miles a day in her,  a crime I know,  but she will be looked after.
Only for a year though,  till I finish college.

Thanks mister! :D
I'm unsure tbh mate, i wouldn't want to ill advise. I shouldn't worry about clocking up the miles though, they get better with age. Mines only got 39K on the clock and ive not finished replacing parts since ive had it! 8O In my opinion, its there to be driven, and for you to enjoy
You could always try a 5 speed box and see how you get on? if you don't like it its no biggy to throw it back to standard. Thats the fun part about the simplicity of these fantastic cars

That's not how gearboxes work - If that were the case, then the car would rev nice and happy in 4th, whip it into 5th and it'd probably struggle to pull the gear. Which is why a number, if not all of the gears are longer ratios - it makes the transition between cogs much more supple, and easier for the engine to cope with - especially with the 1.3's rampant 63bhp!
