Quick question about air filters
Im a bit of a novice when it comes to cars but learning as i go. I own a 1.3 mk1 golf driver, and im interested in tidying up my engine bay and getting a K&N air filter to replace the massive flying saucer under my bonnet! I just wondered if there is anything i need to consider? For instance what do i do with the heater hose form the front of the engine block to the air intake? Any help is appriciated
Regards
Toby

you could maybe look at adapting an SPI inlet to it, that will allow you to fit a gti look airbox on inner wing, though space is limited on mk1 so probably not so good. you could put cone filter on the spi inlet possibly as long as there is some kind of warm air control?
though to me its all a load of hassle for no real gain, save the money imo. if it was me as i say id be looking at 1.4 16v, or maybe a 1.4 abd lump out of a mk3 golf and fit mpi injection from a polo gt or later mk3 1.4

I've heard good things about the replacement ones, but as has already been mentioned, it'll ruin your running in anything other than a nice warm, dry day.
the 1.3 engines aren't really worth tuning, there's not really any power to be had out of them… I've got the K&N, a weber 34ICH carb, ashley 4-2-1 manifold, stainless backbox and skimmed cylinder head - and it's got just about the bhp it had when it came out of the factory.
If you want power, get a different engine, and if you want a reliable runaround, get a different engine.
the small block engines are great because they're properly revvy, mine doesn't sound happy until about 4,000rpm and the peak power is at 5,250rpm. but there's just no room for affordable tuning.

From your comments `Yea after a while when my insurance goes down` it's an issue with you already.
I seriously am NOT a spoilsport, I can introduce you at least one young man that had exactly this problem, cover refused for his car because of a large bore exhaust and alloys they weren't aware of!
2 tintops.
3 cabbies, 1 with G60 power, just for fun.
Volvo T5, just for fun.
3.1Ltr V6 Dutton Leggera, just for fun.
Renault 5 GT Turbo, just a money pit!
Several boring cars, just no fun!

I've had my mk1 gti (82) for 15 yrs daily drive almost mint, but i have a question? I think i know most but my mate also an enthusiast has a theary about air filters..i just wondered if any of you might back him or dismiss him, I have a K&N air filter it needs a new lease of life with the products (k&N) he is not a fan and has advised to replace it with a standard one as the oiling of the K&N is not the best of the oil k-jet electronics inlet track. Any thoughts on this
Cheers all,
Chris

some modern injection systems with maf dont like the k&n oil, but it wont have any effect on k-jet.
a bit of k&n oil wont make any difference when its already caked in engine oil from the breathers anyway. no electronics on a k-jet
