Pierburg carb rough starting

Post

Hi, my recently acquired 1983 1.3 tin top seems to run a bit rough at first once started up but then run smooth as anything once it gets going. Its a pierburg i believe (says so on the side) and just wondering if im right in saying it could do with a bit of an adjustment? when not up to temperature it will stall when left to idle at a junction which is annoying.
Any help would be appreciated! :)Matt

Hi Matt

Im just in the process of a restore on a 1.3 driver. had issues with tick over and replaced the vacume pipes,
(replaced the pipes and rubber connectors)
And it runs alot better, still got to strip the carb. but she ticks over alot better.

Maybe worth checking, easy to do but made a big differance.

Cheers

Matt

Thanks matt might just give that a try, have been thinking that it could also help to give the ignition a look over,
Matt.

Does it run fine when driving, no miss fire's or juddering?

My car has just had the fuel lines cleaned and fuel tank cleaned been stood for a long time, Replaced parkplugs but is still on the 17 year old ht leads and dizzy cap, im going to replace these next week and look at the carb with my dad.

Sounds like the idel jet maybe the issue but im not sure on this engine myself, i have the same carb on mine ill have a look when i strip it down next week.

No seems fine really, I just imagined that the part in the ignition that adjusts with speed was the problem as as soon as its revved past 2 or 3,000 it idles fine, but could be completely wrong about that... Not sure when things have been replaced on mine but probably not that old I hope!

I didnt mention this but it also needs a choke (even on a really hot day) slightly open until it has warmed up to a decent temperature for it to idle properly...

I think its a carb issue, the idle jet blocked, or the mixture not correct also check that the fuel return isnt blocked.

Hope this helps

Well I rebuilt the carb not long after the original post and cleared all the jets and know the return isn't blocked as it leaked the other day due to a loose hose, but I think you could be right about the mixture as when I rebuilt it I fitted a new o ring on the mixture needle but its never quite fitted right since possibly because its slightly too large, and should I get the mixture sorted at a garage with an exhaust sensor?
Cheers,
Matt

Try a colourtune spark plug first to set it up there only £24 for halfords and will allow you to setup the mixture plus it would be a handy tool to have to tune. I'm going to get one tomorrow this some good vids on YouTube they look good
