Oil pressure light....again

Post

Hi, Ive posted about this before in the summer and we discovered that my high pressure sensor was wrong so i got a genuine unit from VW not long after my head gasket went and had some headwork done on it in a garage and the guy told me my pressures are fine so not to worry and maybe its just a faulty sensor so once i had put the high pressure one on the flashing light on my dash went (thank god) but then i noticed that there was still a faint light on which im pretty sure is the low pressure switch which i then replaced with another VW one but the problem is still there most of the time just a faint light and sometimes a bright light :S the guy at the garage told me it probably is an electrical fault because the pressures are fine, so what could it be? and also there is no buzzer to warn me of a oil light, is that normal for a small block?

Thanks,

Matt

Sounds like an electrical fault. If you are putting in the pressure gauge anyway, I wouldnt worry, unless it really bugs you!

my small block has a buzzer. Came on a few times when I had a leaky filler cap. Not sure where it is though.

sounds like you are having almost as many problems as me haha!

well the most irritating problem is the water comming in in the boot and im going through lots of towels soaking it up
well the pressure gauge will go in when i have time and money to do it :( but it does bugg me being in the corner of my eye all the time!
Ive always wondered why i didnt have a buzzer, ill have a check on VAGCAT and see if i can find where it is

Ah, at least I don't have any leaks ;)
Yeah I know what you mean. Broke a temp sensor, the light flashed constantly. Would do my head in so I replaced it. Remove the light? Haha! All I can sensibly suggest is get a multimeter out and test everything. And make sure you 100% have the right sensors in the right places.

yeah its just a seam so ill seal it when ive got time…
I am tempted to remove the light! haha
yeah i might give it a go but dont fancy taking my dash apart again   and they are right because some of the time everything is fine and there are no lights then when its a cold day it seems to be there more…
might ask rubjohnny what he thinks he seems to know everything!   still not sure why i have no buzzer either!

if its on dim its an electrical fault, the light should either be on or off! to start with look at the brown wire from the cluster this is the earth perhaps its come off or is dirty and causing the cluster to earth via the pressure warning system.  on a poverty spec mk1 I believe the earth goes to one of the spade points above the fusebox so start there, make sure everything is clean and you have no random brown wires flopping about loose.

check the connection to the cluster as well, make sure all the pins are nice and tight if any are loose carefully bend them up. check the pcb inside the clock plug as well can be a bit worn away by now or if the plastic housing has come off the plug can be a bit loose

I also have a swimming pool in the boot, and when i open the lid i get a shower from the boot bumper holes,

In the garage so its not on the top of the to do list

Hows the engine after the head work mate?

It runs sweat as ever! its was really worth having a specialist do everything perfectly :)
Mine is actually coming from the seam to the right of my right rear light and has damaged my boot card slightly :(

Back onto the oil light, I haven't had time to check earths yet (hung over this weekend   ), but have noticed that some of the time it is very much on as if it is working correctly and telling me there is a problem so im slightly worried oil pressure may be too high :/

well i was driving home just now wiith my lights on ad the red light flashing away as usual when i switched to main beam and *POP* the light went out so proves it was an electrical fault and now it wont annoy me until i can be bothered to fix it

well ive just taken the dash apart and cannot see any issues :s the pressure light still cant make its mind up despite the drive home after the pop sound :s
The only issue ive found is that the LED strip i put in my clocks has warped the green tint strip  :P
where would the issue be if it was a bad earth? and surely it would affect other aspects of the gauges?

bad earths can do funny things, if it actually made an audiable noise then something has gone so need to dig thru the dash to see if any wires have burnt out or anything

well ive put it all back together and the problem seems to have gone, so ive very happy about that but I cant see why i dont have a buzzer? also ive taken some pictures of the wires for the clocks because about 3 or 4 of them look wiggly not straight as if they have frazzled a bit  O_o also there seem to be a few ribbon connectors not connected to anything behind the clocks? maybe this why there is no buzzer?

the extra ribbons are for mfa extras, if yous has poverty clocks that'll be why. maybe the pop was your buzzer blowign up

well its got a rev counter, fuel gauge, coolant temp and oil warning lights, but surely it shouldnt look like this?

the last one has a ribbon on the side of the white thing which looks like it has been cut or something  O_o

anyway well the original issue seems to be resolved which is great :D
But now i need to find why i dont have a buzzer, also these are the shape of the wires, which look strange

Oh come on! Just gone to get fuel and there goes the bloody blinking again  :P  it must be a dodgey connection somewhere because sometimes it is affected by bumps or something  :(

yeah thats a set of non-MFA clocks, the extra ribbns are for the speed sensor on the speedo and the extra plug for all the mfa signal wires into the cluster. pretty sure they always have that bit snipped off as well but its been a while since i looked at a set.

check closely at the pins inside your clock plug, make sure they are all poking out nicely from the plastic so as to make a good strong contact. check the blue foil in the plug hole as well make sure all the contact pads are good. oh and make sure the surround is in place around it, sometimes these go missing

you can remove the oil pressure circuit board its clipped inside the speedo, see if you can get another set of clocks the same make as yours, poverty spec without revo even be ok just as long as same make. plug in and try, if problem persists its the car, if not its your cluster. just make sure they're the same make as yours, if light goes away swap the oil pressure board over into your clocks and try again. if light comes on then its a deeper issue with cluster maybe the blue foil is worn at clock plug or has a broken track.

edit: also if the plug is a bit worn you can put a strip of card under the blue ribbon to pack it out a bit and make the plug connections a bit tighter

Well the issues is very much still there driving home tonight, its strange that it goes away when i take it apart but comes back soon, so maybe it is the connector that needs padding out, fortunately i do have the surround for the connector,
I will try and get it all apart and have a go at padding the connection like you said and if that doesn't work then ill try and get a new set of clocks, i might take it to somewhere where they can test oil pressure first too to double check but its definitely an electrical fault because of how erratic it was tonight!
Thanks John!
