Oil catch can

Post

I took my air filter lid off last night to have a look to see if the oil had built up on the air filter knowing that quite a lot of smoke normally came out of the breather pipe and I was shocked to see a pool of oil :ocf_emoticons__BangHead: so I've decided that to keep the inlet clean I need to take the breather parts off and stick on a catch can but I cant find any setups that are available on a budget :( although I've not looked on eBay yet,
If anyone could show me how they have theirs set up that would be a big help, I'm assuming that the large amount of smoke and probably oil is an indication that my piston rings are on their way out
Cheers,
Matt

I installed a catch can for the same reasons, found the metering head all gunged up with oily residue so mine's mounted on the front panel next to the rad (drivers side), made a bracket to hold it which uses one of the bumper mount bolts to hold it, got the can from ebay cheap, around 20-30 quid, plumbed it in between block breather and air filter box, might be slightly different than yours as it's a 16v but the principal is the same, had to sort through various old hoses I'd kept to find something that would fit and look ok, cpl of pics attached, just emptied it a cpl of days ago actually, half full of cruddy watery oil, hope this helps a bit

Firstly, wow that's an incredibly engine bay! :o  much better than tucked and smoothed bays!
That looks fairly good, I was worried eBay ones would be tacky! That looks a good place for it too, thanks for sharing the pics  :)

Thanks Mazza you're welcome, with the engine I was trying to achieve the factory fit look with a twist, yeah ebay catch cans are ok and do the job just go steady with the threads on the couplings, get what you pay for I guess

Yeah I've just been reading up on catch cans, the eBay ones will just be empty, but an expensive one will have baffles ect to condense the oil more and stop it making its was into the intake, but I guess anything is better than nothing! Its just a shame the oil absolutely soaked my new k&n :(

Yeah I pondered over wether to put some stainless mesh inside just to give extra surface area to catch crud but didn't bother in the end, guess it would do the job though, crud seems to condense in the pot as it is, maybe due to being located next to the rad ?, in 18months I guess I've emptied mine twice, not a daily driver though, bout halfway up the level indicator and it gets emptied,

Yeah probably the cold air helps it condense, mine is a daily doing 30 miles 6 times a week so im guessing ill be collecting quite a bit!
