Leaking sump

Hi,
After finding the thread was damaged on the sump of my 1.3 CL I purchased a new sump, sump plug and washer from VW Heritage. Despite replacing all of these items, it is still leaking from the sump plug!!
Any ideas of what else I can do to stop it leaking?

Are you tightening the plug enough? And how much is it leaking by? You'll need to tighten it enough to crush the copper washer just enough so that it is oil tight and won't leak

Originally I tightened it to the torque setting specified in the Haynes manual. However, after discovering it was still leaking I tightened it a tiny bit more but this didn't seem to make a difference. It's leaking a fair amount, about the same as the old sump with the damaged thread!

Use the double aluminum washer. I had the same thing in polo.

If it's still a problem, then try some ptfe tape around the thread, this will definately seal it.

Did you replace the sunp plug itself? Maybe that's what's causing the issue

What make is your new sump?
I bought one from ebay (Vee Dub Machine) and there was a manufacturing fault with them as the sump plug would sit on a very slight angle so I could not seal the sump and oil would leak out, I got in contact with the seller and they found me a replacement.
Mine was on a big block car so not sure if it's the same sump?
The leaking one was made my OMG and I've now got a Febi one as a replacement.
I'll up load some pictures of the sort of angle the bolt was later tonight when I get home.

Now you mention it I think I remember the plug didn't quite sit flush against the sump (I assumed that's how it was meant to be) so that could well be the problem. Looks like I might have to source another or try one of the above suggestions

I fitted the OMG sump then as I put the sump plug in I noticed the slight angle on the sump plug so I checked it against my old VW sump and it sat flush so I tried to tighten the sump plug with a new washer and the oil leaked out and the engine is not even in the car yet! Vee Dub Machine was very helpful and sent me a replacement sump (I did not need to send the old one back) as they had a few sumps with the same problem so it will be worth phoning VW heritage to complain about sump, I would not try and over tighten it as you may find you strip the threads, the sump plug should not need to be done up very very tight.
