Bought this a week or so ago, 81 1.1, nice and cheap, rust free floor and all the usual suspect places, 70000miles lovely original interior.
Needs a bit of work as looks tatty but i thought i shall restore this back to original.

Then starting the rear brake rebuild went to fill the master cylinder and noticed (yes days after owning it) that i didnt recognise the engine.
What the hell is it.

Is there any identifing marks that i can tell even what size 1.0, 1.1,1.3 etc…
Ive had mostly big block golfs aside from a 78 1.1 n but i assumed this being 81 was series 2 and newer.

Interesting brake master cylinder, thought all later S2 had the cross linkage and servo/mc on passenger side?

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

So it's a MK2/polo engine, not the original project I had in mind. Doh!!!!
I've bought loads of new bits timing belt, thermostat etc… Do you know if these still fit
It's funny you should mention the master cylinder as it does nothing, after rebuilding the rear drums I went to bleed them and a tiny dribble of fluid pumps out and the pedal has hardly any pressure.
I can't believe whoever changed the engine moved it, that's a lots of work, although looking at the engine it all looks original.
I take it these bits I posted in the electrical section won't get there plugs etc.. now I know it the wrong effing engine

Cause I still have no brake lights
