Fuel pump issue?

So my carb leaks when its parked up after a run, about 10 mins after turning it off it will drip off the accelerator spindle (weber 34). I've had a new diaphragm, and needle put on the carb, a good clean out, and a check of the float, and its still happening.
There is a "very very slight" bit of play in the spindle, but I've had a specialist look over the carb and he is 100% sure its not that, so I'm taking his word for it really. I literally feel like giving up, he is sure that it is a fuel pump issue, causing too much pressure which is making the carb flood. I said I would have a new carb, but he was pretty sure a new carb would leak too.
I am in a bad place to be honest, not slept, I've spent a massive amount of money on this car doing pretty much everything mechanics wise, I've had it since November and barely been able to use it! Just want to get it to Big Bang at Santa Pod next weekend.
I just wanted a few more opinions really, is it known for the fuel pump to cause carb issues?
Thanks for any help!

Saw your post earlier today so had a wee look and think about this as I have a weber on my 1.3 golf and yeah as Chris says it would appear that you have maybe have a problem with the fuel lines - if the fuel in the carb is not draining back through the return line that would cause it to sit. The Y shaped piece is known as the restricter and is connected to the fuel supply line and fuel return line so if you don't have that it will mean that fuel that has already been pumped into the carb - just prior to you switching off will be sitting from my understanding. When you got your weber did you get the diagram with it? I have one which I can post if you need it. I maybe completely wrong about the fuel lines but basically excess fuel should go back to the fuel tank as intended so you situation sounds a bit weird.
From what you say I don't think it is the fuel pump - as you are receiving fuel to run the car - if it is cutting out then it would sound like the fuel pump is having issues if not then I would say it is either the above or an actual problem with the carb itself - either the float regulator is not working properly or you have an issue with too much suction. But if the carb specialist that you went to said it was fine then at a bit of a loss - though I'm sure one of the experts here will know what to do and probably have just not seen your post - suggest posting it on Mk1 Golf chat maybe?

I only bought the car in November, the Weber was already fitted, so I'm guessing this has always been and issue since the carb was originally fitted.
Grrrrr, I very nearly bought a new Carb yesterday!! Glad I didn't! From what I gather if fuel gets to the accelerator spindle it will leak, even on a new carb!
I've bought a new pump as it was only £16 as I had heard they can cause too much pressure, but I'm going to get this guy to put a fuel return on it as well.
Hopefully that will solve it!
Once again thanks so much for the help guys.

Not happening.
Got the carb specialist coming to have a look on Monday, he seems to think you can put a t piece on it and route a pipe from between the Carb and Pump, back to a lower point in the fuel pipe.
I can't see what that would do myself, or I may have misunderstood him. He's got 40 years experience though so I'm not gonna argue with him. Definitely showing him the diagram above though!
I think it makes perfect sense that it needs a fuel return, so that fuel left in the carb has somewhere to go.

"The Carb man" has been round today, my dad met him. He's basically put in a simple fuel return, on the basis that the actual fuel return is probably in a bad way, its blocked off for some reason. With me going to Santa Pod on friday, its a case of getting it running, but according to my dad, jobs a good'n!
He's put a T-piece in the section of fuel pipe that goes from the pump to the carb, and routed it to further down the fuel pipe (towards tank) Just before the filter in the bay.
Its got a one way valve on it, so its basically to divert any pressure. At the end of the day the guy has 40 years experience, so as long as it doesnt leak, im happy!
Him and my dad took the car out for a good 20 minute run, then had a brew and watched the back of the carb…
NO LEAKS!
Fingers crossed for Santa Pod!
Powerflow tomorrow too! Things are finally looking up!
