Engine leaking oil over exhaust manifold

Post

Little help please. My mk1 seems to be leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold. I thought this was the rocker cover gasket but I cleaned it all off the head and tightened the rocker cover (will replace gasket though) and it still seems to be bubbling out from somewhere and pouring onto the manifold. I couldn't see it coming from the rocker cover anywhere? Anyone know where it could be coming from?

Video here, hope this works

Just thinking it can't be that though coz the exhaust mani is above the head gasket. Maybe it's the dizzy seal??

ah yeah good point, oil would be running down below it if it was that. could be dizzy seal if its coming down and around from the side of the block? It's a strange one, if its not dizzy seal you could maybe take the mani off and see where the oil has been running from?
good luck with it though!

check the oil pressure switch(es) they're round the back of the head near the diver side and can split

Yeah going replace rocker gasket and dizzy seal first and see if that sorts it.

Right been a while since I've been able to look at this again. I took off dizzy clean it up and put it back on, its definately not coming from a badly sealed dizzy.

And Im now 90% sure its coming out through the exhaust manifold gasket.  O_o

Its like the pressure is too high so its making its way through the seals? But the fact its coming out just above the exhaust manifold, does that mean the head gasket has gone, and hence oil is getting into the cylinders? you would think it would just go down the exhaust though not out of the top of the exhaust manifold…. Im just not sure now, think its best I get a professional over lol.

if its coming from above the exhaust manifold its not the head gasket, because thats underneath the manifolds ;)

if its coming out the exhaust then you have a piston ring and/or valve stem seal problem.

if its coming from above the exhaust then its the rocker cover seal. perhaps the breather in the rocker cover is clogged up and thats why its blowing oil out of the seals?

cam seal? Sometimes runs down the side and round to the front.  Has on mine before.

Looks very much like its coming from the rocker though, you sure its not just leftover oil from before you cleaned it off? It does take a while to burn away.

Right, finally figured this out!!! It was coming from the exhaust manifold bolts! The studs that come out of the head, the oil was leaking from them from the inside of the head as obviously they weren't sealed correctly!

So simply took off the exhaust manifold, put some sealant round the base of each exhaust manifold stud/bolt and then bolted it back up. Hey-presto no oil leaks. Such a simple problem!! but glad its fixed now.

Hopefully anyone else who has this problem can easily fix this too now.
