Car bogging down under acceleration

Ive not been driving my golf for the past few weeks now that im away at uni and ive been back this weekend so ive been giving it a good run and it was running really well all of yesterday although i could tell it was running rich. Today i took it for a drive with no issues then not long after i took it out again and it started to really badly bog down when i put my foot down a little bit, to the point where i could make it past 30mph! So i changed the dizzy cap and rotor arm, set the timing and tuned the carb as best as i could (it was really rich!) and now it is much better but it still hesitates when i put my foot down then it will suddenly accelerate normally So is this a fueling issue? I know my carb is rubbish because the mixture screw doesnt adjust very well, and also the pivot arm going through the carb is letting fuel leak through somehow! so it wont be long before i swap it out for some twin 40's but is there anything ive missed that could be causing this issue?

Ive not been home yet to investigate the issue, but could the sparkplugs being covered in deposits from running really rich cause this sort of issue? i only had time to take one plug out to give it a clean so the other three will be heavily sooted

I can only think the issue isnt ignition related but the problem did seem to be significantly improved when the rotor arm and cap were changed  

Stick a new and I mean NEW correct set of plugs in and wait to see what happens!

For you it's low-cost solution possibly at this point.  

But if your Carb is also bugg…. then replace that as well but plugs first and don't bother cleaning the old ones.  

At least it's a start.  

And new points and condensor if it has any.

I was slightly reluctant to do that because they have only seen about 300 miles since I fitted them   

Also I am going to fit twin 40's fairly soon hopefully so getting a new carb and ensuring it runs well (ie replacing gaskets etc.) Doesn't seem worth while 

I should have mentioned, it is a polo GT engine with polo electronic ignition so no more points for me  

But I'll have a go at cleaning, or swapping in some known good plug to see if a difference is made then I'll buy some new ones for peace of mind 

If the plugs are that new then give them a clean with a wire brush being careful not to close the gap but might be worth checking the gap once your done then just pop them back in.

its hard checking the gap because they have three pins! but ill give them a good clean and see how things go, im home this weekend so got lots of car related things to do

As they are 3 pins ones then you can't really check the gap just be careful cleaning them not to close the gap. 

Just had a look, they are sooty but it dusted off in my fingers and with a kitchen towel, however the problem is still there so i suspect its carb related.

I have just (slightly impuslivly) bought a used carb off eBay as a temp replacement which will hopefully not have the same fuel leak and running issues mine seems to have! But it will be a while till I can swap it on over into my car which means I'm without a car while I'm back at home
