The problem is even with this tightened up the battery can still slide left to right. This is because the proper VW battery has a fatter ?lip? than 99% of the replacement ones.
What you are supposed to be given at the same time as the battery is an extra piece of plastic to make the bottom maintaining lip fatter. I?ve come across loose batteries on millions of Golfs. What I normally do is place some old kitchen ?Lino? (so it doesn?t retain water and cause rot) under the battery to lift it up so that the clamp does actually clamp it down. Hope this makes sense!

I think the actual plate the battery sits on, with the hole for the bolt you mentioned is missing though . i'll take a photo when i get the chance, to show you what i mean.
