Accelerator Pedal "Sticking"

un-intentional cruise control on my Driver

Hello All,

I am having an intermittent problem with my accelerator pedal getting stuck down ever so slightly, enough to maintain a steady speed in whatever gear. I can flick the pedal back up with my foot and it stops it but it can make me sound a terrible driver when changing gear and the car revs without intention!

I have read that it can be a cable problem…but i have no idea what to do to sort it, any help would be great!

Many Thanks

Toby

I had this once

It was some insulation getting mixed up with the pedal and meaning it would hold it where it was

yeah i would buy a new rubber bush, mk2 golf ones are cheaper than mk1. try vw as well as GSF, last time I bought one VW was cheaper :)

as for fitting its a case of unhook from accellerator pedal, pull it out the bulkhead, disconnect from carb and refit the new one the same way old one came off! before you start though cvheck both ends of the new cable are the same as the old one ;)

when adjusting set it so that when pedal is flat to the floor, the throttle is just at wide open (i.e. you cant pull it open any further by hand )

oh and while you're under the dash check the throttle pedal isnt bent, it should pull the cable in a straight line thru the hole in the bulkhead. if the cable is set too tight it will bend and eventually end up pulling the cable at an angle which leads to it being damaged and becoming sticky.

I had this too, changed the cable and had to cut some of the hardboard insulation material under the dash to give more clearance for the pedal

I thought i had to change my cable when mine did this but it turned out to just be the mechanism on the carb getting stuck on a cable tie someone used to fix a vacuum leak… so might be worth checking first to save you some £'s
