14EW? Campain chassies?

Orite seen this and wondered if it's anyone knows if its true it's a 1.3 driver i think. (come to think of it i have the holes in my wishbones for the antiroll bar)
Car has 17EW chassis number, which mk1 fans know is the same as the mk1 gti campaign model.

I'd imagine that it is a genuine driver, would seem strange for someone to convert a GTI into a driver. The E in EW actually relates to the production year and therfore is not exclusice to campaigns. All Campaigns are GTIs so can't really call this one a campaign.

Cheers

Aye - all it means it that it's a really late shell.  My Mk1 Driver is a DW and was registered 1st Aug '83 (if memory servers) so that one must be a really really late one.

PS.  The "Massive oil leak from the head" is probably just a blocked breather filer on the back of the block - don't hold me to that but it probably is, 9 times out of 10 it is…

Unfortunately he mentions that the leak is from above the alternator which, on the small-block engine, means that the head gasket is leaking oil from this corner (a common issue, mentioned in the Haynes manual).

The head gasket hasn't necessarily failed for compression or coolant, but it will need replacing to stop the leak. Still, not too bad a job - you could do it in an afternoon with a torque-wrench, new gasket, head bolts, (and a new timing belt, to be safe)

an of course, it'll be tax exempt in three years…..

It never ceases to amaze me, how many people think this is the case……..

Aye but - given his description of the rest of the car - the oil might be getting pushed past the dipstick holder.  It might be coming from anywhere for all we know - the guy might even be looking in the boot instead of under the bonnet.

Well I'm guessing this auction finished anyway - any of us lot buy it then?

Bit late (he's just gone out(), but yeh I think Ken might have brought back the rolling 25 year tax thing..

Head gasket oil leak tip - do it quick before it takes out your alternator (100 miles from home, at night, in the rain when you are running late for a mate's birthday party of course).  Mine just done this, and I had to spend ?40 in a new battery just to get home as I couldn't find a spare alternator on a Sunday!
