Who told you that?  Cos to build a 1.3 turbo you'd need to have injection for a start! Then you'd need all gti fuel lines and tank, then a turbo and manifold, custom remap!  Its a LOT of work!

A 1.3 on carbs would only require the carbs!

If you went down the turbo route it'd be best to start with a Polo GT block n head, ECU etc

Yes a turbo cant just be bolted on,the block for a turbo is made stronger to cope with the extra stresses, the pistons usually have an extra ring or 2,there also needs to be an oil feed and return, and the final problem is its got a carb, injection would be better but a carb can be used as like the maestro 2.0 turbo.

thats what i have got! a polo gt engine ecu etc it's comming out of my polo gt!!!  dont need a gti fuel tank! got the turbo! my mate can make the manifold! and why is injesction better! R5 GTT ran on carb fine! one of my m8's had a 170BHP R5 and ran perfectly

you don't need fuel injection to run a turbo - good christ…    R5 turbo for a start . Lotus Esprit turbo….etc etc….

and you can run a turbo on a totally standard engine internally, people have been doing it for years.  :)

If your going to turbo your engine then I suggest you have the head chambers increased to drop the c/r, this is a cheaper option to fitting low comp pistons and can be done by any competant diy'er or me    (I mod heads on the side, mainly minis tho) The main thing is to make sure you get them all the same size. PM me if you want any advise.

As for turbo installs, run a carb, far simpler to set up etc. Look at Metro turbos, they can give close to 200bhp with no problems, but the A series engine doesn't like being made to work hard   Infact you could probably use the Metro wiring harness and make it work on your engine. I have a mate who is very clued up on them if you want any info.

You can also use a thicker head gasket… to lower c/r   :)

Depends on HOW much you want though.

you sound a helpfull guy to know well i'm going to be using a R5 GTturbo carb and if poss turbo but any t2 garret will do (if anybody has one let me know) then need fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator etc think my gt engine should be ok because it has a low cr anyway!

A Facet red top pump will do the job, can pick one of those up and a reg on ebay fairly cheaply new.

turbo small block

why not use a 1.3 (8.2 to 1 compression) mark1 golf complete engine…..g40 polo exhaust manifold & supercharger (pulleys/belts)…….modifiy R5 carb to fit the inlet manifold…….and fabricate the pipework…..also add a dump valve, this will act as a pressure relief valve

theres a blue polo2 squareback on Club Polo with a set up like this but using a 1.0 & bmw mini charger

yeh thas ma mate kris!, but he said he did alot of work on it!

kris lives by me and decided to go for that charger after seeing it on my g40. he has his 1 litre running a r5gtt carb

very cheap charger to buy

i have an eaton m45 charger conversion for sale at the moment for ?530 with an AMD 55mm pulley with cost me ?100

this kit includes all the pulleys, belts, charger, plate etc.

my mate kris bought my original g40 pistons off me and still has them somewhere. if you can get hold of some of these then they will be stronger low comp pistons and i think they are 1272cc like the engine you wanna use, not sure about the stroke though

here is a pic of the charger on my 1308cc 230bhp polo g40

if you want advice about this then go onto pitstopdevelopments website. always bits for sale

or if your going carbs then there is a guy on club polo called simmo who has got twin 40s on his mk2 polo squareback 1272cc and that thing sounds awesome. goes quite well and didnt cost him much

intercooler wise you could go for a 2wd cossie intercooler or a vw sharan intercooler which is about the same shape and size but has plastic end caps.

metal end caps are always better as they are stronger and can always be adjusted.

if you did go for injection then i should have a spare set of g40 injectors here somewhere that you can have for cheap. they will run up to about about 180bhp but are running 100% full duty cycle then and can cause the injectors to go static, which isnt good.

just throwing some ideas at you thats all :)

How's the turbo conversion going? I have an '83 driver (had it for nearly 10 years now) Was wondering if it would be possible to fit a turbo to the little 1.3 engine. Or if it'd be easier to source a polo gt or g40 engine and fit that instead?
