Who told you that? Cos to build a 1.3 turbo you'd need to have injection for a start! Then you'd need all gti fuel lines and tank, then a turbo and manifold, custom remap! Its a LOT of work!
A 1.3 on carbs would only require the carbs!
If you went down the turbo route it'd be best to start with a Polo GT block n head, ECU etc

Yes a turbo cant just be bolted on,the block for a turbo is made stronger to cope with the extra stresses, the pistons usually have an extra ring or 2,there also needs to be an oil feed and return, and the final problem is its got a carb, injection would be better but a carb can be used as like the maestro 2.0 turbo.

and you can run a turbo on a totally standard engine internally, people have been doing it for years.

As for turbo installs, run a carb, far simpler to set up etc. Look at Metro turbos, they can give close to 200bhp with no problems, but the A series engine doesn't like being made to work hard  Infact you could probably use the Metro wiring harness and make it work on your engine. I have a mate who is very clued up on them if you want any info.

If your going to turbo your engine then I suggest you have the head chambers increased to drop the c/r, this is a cheaper option to fitting low comp pistons and can be done by any competant diy'er or me  (I mod heads on the side, mainly minis tho) The main thing is to make sure you get them all the same size. PM me if you want any advise.

You can also use a thicker head gasket… to lower c/r
Depends on HOW much you want though.

very cheap charger to buy
i have an eaton m45 charger conversion for sale at the moment for ?530 with an AMD 55mm pulley with cost me ?100
this kit includes all the pulleys, belts, charger, plate etc.
my mate kris bought my original g40 pistons off me and still has them somewhere. if you can get hold of some of these then they will be stronger low comp pistons and i think they are 1272cc like the engine you wanna use, not sure about the stroke though
here is a pic of the charger on my 1308cc 230bhp polo g40
if you want advice about this then go onto pitstopdevelopments website. always bits for sale
or if your going carbs then there is a guy on club polo called simmo who has got twin 40s on his mk2 polo squareback 1272cc and that thing sounds awesome. goes quite well and didnt cost him much

metal end caps are always better as they are stronger and can always be adjusted.
