As I recall, the 1.1C managed about 95mph at top whack, with a 0-60 time of around 13-14 seconds. Not stella, but not bad for 45 bhp. Feels faster though and it's a Golf after all

Not a huge amount you can do to increase the performance without spending silly money that would be better spent saving for a GL/GTI. You can have all the fun of suspension and wheel changing though, but bare in mind that a tidy 'C' in standard trim today is pretty unusual and would certainly get attention at the right shows (ours in particular)

For ?250 you should be looking at a pretty tidy example between X-A reg.

Cheers,

Drew.

I think their top speed was quoted at something like 88mph or 91mph - whatever the official VW quoted top speed - my dad got stopped by the Police in his doing 5mph more…

When you get stick of it - chuck a Mk3 Polo GT 1.3 engine in on a twin choke carb.

thanks 4 the replies, yeah the car seems pretty mint when I saw it. gonna go have another look at it tomorrow, I will probably end up getting it 4 around ?200, its a 1983. Pretty standard, cant wait to get it fingers crossed.

I think most 1980s 4 speed VWs were about 90mph tops, which wasn?t fantastic even back then. Not very useful if you do lots of motorway work but lowish gearing does mean it?ll be OK around town.

Like Drew says if it?s original and tidy I?d spend keeping it that way instead of 17 inch wheels, bonnet spoiler and bee-stings.

We want some pics!

If I buy it tomorrow, it takes a few days 4 tehm to deliver it, but when I get it ill definately post in some pics, I have already got smoked taillights from a mate   The only thing it needs is a new grill as it is damaged.

1093cc GG engine has 50bhp and VW originally quoted its top speed as 87mph and 0-60 as 16.8 sec. Mines not to sluggish to 45mph, but takes a bit more time to get to 60-70mph, all the same will sit quite comfortably at 70mph. You have to make up for the lack of grunt by carrying a bit more speed through the corners  GSF do new grills

wen i used to have a 1.1 i stuck a weber carb on it and managed to get 112 mph (only once though - and that was after a oil change!)

took bloody ages to get to that though!!

Hey welcome to the forum!
I love my 1.1c its a fun little thing. Mine has a weber carb, as the old solex one used to leak pretty bad apparently. I've seen 103mph after about 5 mins flat out on the motorway with a little downhill help. But it will easily get to 85, and 90 isnt too hard. I actually find its a pretty good motorway car, if a little noisy. 87mph in mine is exactly 6,000 rpm (i think). Before you start thinking about mods, make sure its running as good as it can by checking & if necessary replacing the following:
air filter ?3
oil ?7
oil filter ?4
fuel filter ?3
clean out the air intake with loads of wd40

Learning how to drive a light 50hp car quickly means much more anticipation than in a more powerful car. This is great practice for driving a powerful car faster because you'll have to think more about momentum and braking

ra, those parts are quite cheap, and I know how to change them all anyway, so might have to invest in that. My m8 was telling me about getting twin 40's u know anything about this ?

Oh yeah and forgot to say, I already got the smocked rear lights for my car, and guess how much 4 ???????? FREEEEEEE LOL

For the money it would cost, I really think you'd be better off putting twin 40's on a bigger lump. But i'd be interested to see how you get on if you do. I've considered spending a few hundred quid on a nitrous kit (which could be taken off and used on the next car) for the amusement of seeing a Nitrous powered 1.1 golf. But i'd want to have a look inside the engine first to make sure it was sound, plus change the older gaskets.
But let me say again what a difference a good service makes. When i got my car it would do 82ish top, and after spending about ?20 on it and an hour under the bonnet, the thing could do three figures! You really must look at and change those service parts!!
Good bargain on the rear clusters btw. So where are these pics then!

i had a 1.1 in black too which i recently got rid of, a 1983 model! for speed il tell you now its slower than... i cant even think! i had 15inch ronals on there. the 0-45 was nice, no problems. i lowered the car by 40mm and the handling was the best i have EVER driven (being 20 iv only driven a few cars tho). on motorway i hit 80mph, but maybe coz of the wheels, was slower than everyone elses predictions. its a good lil car, but i had to do so much to it and keep doing something or other to it that i got fed up and sold it. i have a civic coupe now, doesnt have the personality, the follwing or the awe of a mk1, but hey im able to see of most cars in that. one more thing, i dont think everyone will agree with me but i changed the drums at the back for discs. maybe it was my drums is particular but everytime i braked it was like my life was on the line. with discs i could wisk it round a corner and come to a halt no probs.

thats a good point about wheels dizzy, i use 13" gti rims with std tyres. I wouldn't recommend anything bigger or you will loose acceleration. I also lowered my suspension and it improved handling nicely. But i will say that putting low springs on old dampers and driving it fairly hard did finish the dampers off, one gave up and coughed its oil out everywhere. So i ended up changing the front dampers for new ones…

80mph top seems a bit slow to me though. i wonder what difference the carb / wheel diameter make.

Markone - whats the top speed you've had from your 1.1c ?

70 is the speed limit sonny Jim

My little 1.1 is great, quite pokey considering…..although I'll be honest I've never took her above 65, out of respect.

Mine's hit 85mph at times going down hill (on a private road of course) and feels like it could do a bit more. Has got the weber replacement carb, but not sure if this really offers any performance increase. To be honest don't like to push the engine hard at higher speeds as gets a bit thrashy (suppose I'am comparing it to be my GTI). Very smooth between 65-70mph and engine noise almost disappears at this speed.

The larger the rolling radiaus of the wheels/tyres over the original spec the more your speedo will under-read. In other words, 15 inch wheels will mean your speedo shows a slower speed than your actually travelling at - could get caught out by speed cameras 8O

Hi, first post!

I have a 1093 golf c. I bought it for too much and it has had some horrible mods (halfords alloys, cheap buckets, cheap 6x9's, etc) but its essentially solid.

The good part is the solid shell and the kand n filter which with the stainless single box pipe is actually pretty quick.

wheel size

just a quick note, changing 13" wheels for 15" does not need to affect the speedo, or the abililty to accelerate, all you need to do is down size your rubber! if you follow the simple rule of 10 you'll be fine. for every extra inch in wheel diameter you go up, increase tyre width by 10 and reduce aspect ratio by 10. go on try it and do the math, only go as far as 15" and match them with some low profiles, and you will end up with a rolling diameter very close to the original spec.
i've got a red 1.1 '82, a pile of chrome bits, driver clocks, new lights, and some 15"polished porsche teledials all waiting to be assembled in a lockup at the moment, when i can find the time!
mk1's are the best!!
