1.1 carb help
The vacuum pipes on mine look all over the place to say its the standard carb theres vacuum lines that have just been cut and blocked off this cant be right! mines one of the last year of mk1's made if tht makes a difference to the carb?
Or failing that if no one has any photos does anyone have a vacuum hose diagram for the carb? cheers guys

basically one to the vacuum advance on the dizzy, the other to the warm/cold air intake setup on the airfilter box.
whereabouts in nottingham are you btw?

Ah nvm, I'm from stoke, I just go to uni there and i always see a well low mk1 around derby road. It annoys me cause i can't work on mine while i'm there

It doesn't idle very well at all, its quite lumpy, changed the points and condensor and it pulls better now once u have the revs up but still doesnt like idling. I think its just a mixute of lots of littles bits need sorting, had mot today and it passed but the guy said hydro carbons are quite high which would suggest its running lean and it does have quite a wiff of petrol haha
but you can't touch the mixture screw as soon as u make quarter a turn either way it just splutters and cuts out

Ah see I'm not that familar with carbs yet. Mine had a similar problem, adjusted the ignition timing and idle speed screw on the carb and it's much better now (not quite perfect though). Maybe check those too?
Good stuff on the MOT pass though, dreading what'll come up in mine. just been stripping the braking system down in the rain, great fun

Yeah cant imagine that was much fun! its not actually rained here yet today, rite so he's what i have on my carb, theres one pipe on the back going no where….
and then another one on the choke side of the carb going no where…
I have no vacuum lines going directly from the carb to the distributor, the vacuum line going to the dizzy splits off from the main pipe from the inlet manifold to the brake servo through a t piece. tht sound a bout right?

however…
the second one should have a pipe going to the distributor…
on the top of the dizzy there shouldbe a round disc with a pipe on the top?
if you have this then you should go get some vac hose and join that hole to this piece.
unless you have a form of electric ignition that doesnt need vac advance??
any way yeah, if you stick this on you may find the car runs much better up higher in the revs.
thumbs up all round

Does this need changing round then?

lol
um well im not quite sure of that setup… get an engine bay pic and ill see what you mean… lol
you should have a 10mm pipe coming off the manifold and going to the brake servo with a non return valve on it, an then the pipe form the dizzy going to the carb.
i think the vac is alot stronger on the servo coming from the manifold than from the small inlet on the side of the carb

then remove all the hoses lol.
take off the rubber t piece and put the non return valve back on the rubber bit going to the manifold.
then take the long pipe coming from the distributor and put it onto the nipple shown in the second image above.
so you have no t pieces and no green bottle..
try that
oh also…
i noticed some residue on the ali base plate in one of the earlier pics.. this looks like mine when my rubber gasket was letting fuel and air out.. take the air filter off and move the carb slightly, while doing it look around the gasket and see if it separates from the base plate or carb, if it does and you see liquid in there then you got a leaking gasket, this will be another reason why it can run like crap
im having exactly the same problem at the mo… mine wont idol for shit.. i know mines the gasket but i cant get it till after the agm… that should be a fun drive up.. lol
hope some of this helps…
if you dont understand some of my gibberish ill take some photos tomorrow after work an let you match it up

What youve got there is a dizzy thats having full vac advance pulled at idle and most of the way up the rev range due to the piping being wrong.
Does it "pink " at all?
Although some carbs do have the vacuum piped to the dizzy in that manner, they usually have a retard capsule fitted to the other side of the diaphragm on the vac advance so the correct advance curve is gained.
Carb looks like an old solex on that one photo so it only has the port for the one vacuum line.
Pipe the vacuum to the dizzy to the carb directly and blank off the vaccum port from the servo as you want the carb to actuate the vac advance capsule as the revs alter, not to have it pulled full on all the time.

i got my gasket off crazyquiffs. your non return valve should still be fine to use mate, just pull the rubber t pipe off it and but the old pipe round with the jubilee clip on it. job done
im thinking of getting a ali carb mount made up for mine as i dont have the standard air box on and mine wobbles like crazy… if i get one made and they work well ill see if i can start banging them out with a gasket set to make the carb more stable
hope you get it all sorted. ill keep my eye on this throughout the day as my boss is on holiday so i can pop on here
ill get them pics just after 6 an ill pop them up about 7. i got some tinkering to do any way.. im getting bored of it not idoling properly
are you taking it to the agm??

I don't think I will be at the agm, a load of mates are going down to bugjam as they've all got different dubs so I think I'll be heading down there with them instead of being a loner and coming agm as much as i'd love to go! :/
Not sure how much longer I'm gonna have the 1.1 in my car if everything goes to plan could only be a month or so!:-) but will still be interesting to see if ur mounting plate idea works :-)
