what brake conversion to go for? polo GT powered mk1
Ive been trying to look around and find a inexpessive yet effective brake conversion for my golf, its a golf c with a 1.3 polo GT engine, with around 100-110bhp but is currently on standard brake set-up, so want to upgrade my front brakes to suit.
i was thinking either mk1 gti brakes or mk2 gti brakes, but dont actually know what parts i need to get either on and working correctly, any advise and directions would be appreciated.
regards, shaun

Audi 80 256mm with Passat 22mm Servo, goodridge brakelines & 90spec 16v Mk2 golf master cylinder. EBC greenstuff front pads & brembo max front discs for 90spec mk2. Its what I have on mine although mine has less power at the mo & its a great setup, need min of 14in wheels for brakes mind you.

right, thanks for the replies ppl, one of the problem i am facing is what brake setups will go stright on e.g. just need discs, pads and calipers + carriers which wpould be ideal for cost effectiveness uless you could do one of the vauxhall conversions fairly cheap, if all parts come from a scrappers?
thanks again for the help

Mine fits direct to the hub, just sourcing them. See if theres a cabby in the breaking sction with vented discs as they have better calipers as standard

take the carriers from the polo, but dont bother with the calipers they'll be VWI. fit mk1/2 gti VWII calipers and vented 239mm brakes, more than good enough. you can get the VWII calipers off mk3 golfs and other vags too, even our 2000 reg seat ibiza 1.4 has them

Right, sounds good be worth paying a visit to my local VW broker, i dont actually have the polo the engine came from so need to sorce every thing myself, won't the VWII cariiers do from a gti? also with this brake upgrade is it worth a using a better booster and servo?

any mk1 golf, cab or scirocco with a 1.5-1.8 engine in will have the carriers you need, unless its really early with the old skool square brake pad setup. these cars all have VWII calipers too
make sure the bleed nipples are free before you take the calipers though, if not search around the yard for newer VWIIs. take as many caliper fixing bits as you can as they often get damaged over the years, try to go for a set off a more modern vw as the design changed. i think they retro fit to the mk1 carriers, but to be safe nick the fixings off the donor of the carriers as well.
mk2/3 have the carriers cast into the bearing carrier assembly so these are no good, hence why you want mk3 polo or mk1 golf for those
