urgent!!!! brake problems **mot soon**
im nearly done rebuilding my gti cabriobut ive got a problem with the brakes 8O
and its due in for mot this week 8O the servo and master cylinder have been changed for mk2 16v ones
took it out for its first spin yesterday (just up the street) and ive found that after a bit of braking harse or not all my brakes start slowly binding on :?
then after 5-10 mins they were released again :dontknow:
so i changed the master cylinder but still had the same problem :dontknow:
so i figured the only thing that all the brakes have in common is the servo, so on the off chance i pulled of the big pipe from the inlet and pop the brakes were released 8O so is this just a faulty servo????
or is there something else im missing???
how is all that vacuum in the servo supposed to dissapaite???
ive also done the servo test were you put your foot on the brake and start up and the pedal goes down like it should

I'm sure someone else had this exact same problem, but I can't find the post. The conclusion was, that fitting the servo and master cylinder on the Golf without first modifying the link between them, meant that the brakes were inadvertently being slightly applied all the time, which gave the symptoms you describe.
No doubt a thorough search of the posts will be able to find more details on how to cure this. Or someone else knows the details. I'm interested in the outcome too, because I have all the bits ready to do the same conversion, but not yet done it.

The clue is in the MK1 return spring ………..
No return spring on the rear of the servo bracket , drive , engine on overrun creates suction to servo , servo starts to operate slowly , brakes come on slowly , the rest is history .
You must use a MK1 type clevis mounting pin with the return spring . I have never had a MK2 but as the master cylinder was in front of the driver as apposed to the Mk1 being in the passenger side it must have had a return spring fitted to the pedal box so would not have had this problem .

The Servo and cylinder that you have fitted, is it new or second hand?
It's just that I had exactly the same symtoms, and when you popped the pipe like you said the brakes would release. mine turned out to be a dodgy valve in the servo. I replaced the servo and all was fine.
Hope this helps
