toledo engine
hey, im just a bit curious about an engine conversion i am planning on a mk1 golf.
ive seen a nice toledo for sale but im unsure of the seat set-up. so i guess what i wanna know is does this car have all nec. parts to fit in mk1 golf gti 1600 (im aware i have to change an engine mount, not sure which tho)
and would this conversion require any specialist work or customisation?
any help appreciated
cheers

I'll assume Seat Toledo, not Triumph. What year and model is the Toledo?

I don't really have any certainty but I think the 2.0 8V Toledo has an AGG engine code. Its basically the same as Mk3 Golf/Vento engine. Its a reasonable enough conversion but you'd need to bear in mind, its a tall block so you might have issues with bonnet clearance and fitting the exhaust manifold. Also, its quite a low state of tune, unsure whether you can release 'extra' power by remapping the ECU whether you'd need to change the cam too. Either way, its set up for using a cat so you'd need at least to retain the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, if you retained the stock ECU. With it being a Mk1 GTI 1600 you can safely ditch the cat, which will help, since the requirement is based on the age of car or engine, whichever is older.
I'd say if you already have the Toledo, go for it, otherwise don't buy that car simply for its engine conversion. There would be plenty of other parts you'd need too (the Toledo, by no means carries all the parts you'd need) and with the extra cost and effort in sorting these out (ECU, manifold, cam, various bits & bobs) you may as well invest in a little more, and go for something which will gain you a much bigger % increase in power.
Of course, thats just my opinion, someone else may come along and say something completely different!

i see what your sayin, its gonna be an ongoing project so eventually itll be maxed any way. i think 16v is gonna be the prefrance atm, more tuneable and obvious advantages…
the toledo has gone now so were lookin for another donor car, what would you suggest? will more than likely be changing everything inc loom etc.
also lookin at puttin discs on the rear, am i right in thiunking that the mk2 stub axels fit on the mk1 axel??
thanks again, very helpfull

Its the same as anyone else, how much money do you have, what performance level do you want, what's the intended use of the car (daily driver, occasional road use, track days?), what skills and tools do you have, etc

If you honestly have ?500-600 then forget about the ABF conversion (from Mk3 Golf GTI 16V). It would be so tight on that budget, even if possible, that you'd have to cut corners and you'd end up with a bodged unreliable job at the end of it. For ABF, think ?1500-2000 if you're doing the work yourself.

i see, so what would you suggest?? can the 1.8 bottom end be swaped for the 2.0?
and rear brakes too??

and rear brakes too??

no need to fiddle/upgrade rear brakes, just make sure they're well maintained.
For that money, probably 3A bottom end, giving a 2 litre 8V? Getting hard to find that engine tho.

i believe the 2e block has the same affect? 10 a penny atm!! lol
the rear brakes are drums and wanna put discs all round, wanna know it will stop well!! lol
so you recon pb engine? they have digi injection too, no more k-jet antics allowed! what are g/box options t suit the car? standard 02a/j?
cheers

Ok with your budget, and if 2E is much easier to find than 3A, then go with that. Forget about rear discs - your budget is too tight and the drums are good enough (when you decelerate quicker, weight transfer to the front means that the rear brakes don't do that much work).
Use your standard gearbox too, no real advantage in going to 02A (and the 2E in the Mk3 Golf GTI uses an 020 anyway??)
