Strange? usually we all suffer from sloppy changes. Not sure about stiff. Still get under the car and check all the linkages are free moving, bushes etc aren't too worn. Plus check gear box level.
Welcome by the way, see this is your first post - tell us a bit about yourself, what Golf do you have?

Sometimes the plastic ball is known to disintergrate at the base of the gear stick, mine has started to go . This may be causing a problem.
Each year I clean the linkage on mine with white spirit and a paint brush, then use spray greese , the type used on motorbike chains ,this improves the gear change a lot.

Sorry to highjack here but need some help!!
Got a Golf C, getting into 1st gear is a total nightmare, im not just being a wuss, because the gear level is almost bending with the force needed to get it to engage sometimes
Any ideas?? Bushes maybe, what should I look for?

Is it OK with engine off? Perhaps clutch needs adjusting?
11/1300 gearboxes have a much simpler selection mechs with very few bushes to replace.

It seems ok when off, when warm its getting really difficult to select though, can someone like Kwik fit undertake a bushes change or is it a DIY job?

If it gets worse when warm I'd drain out the old oil and re-fill with some fresh.

I have bought a linkage finger and some ball thing that goes on the bottom of the stick and can wear out apparently.

In case you wanted to know, I have fixed the gear problem.
The clutch cable was coming through the bulkhead so with some help from my buddies, we were able to make an aluminium plate to go across and stop this happeining.
Its super smooth now!
