Steering rack.

Had a new steering rack fitted, tracking and camber adjustment. Problem is I appear to have lost full lock and find it difficult to pull into a normal parking space!!! Could this be an adjustment issue or is there more than one kind of rack fitted to the Mk1 Gti Cabrio? :dontknow:

does it go more turns one way than the other? also check the rubber boots arnt getting caught up in the rack. there was only 1 rack offered for the MK1 in terms of steering lock, the outside of them differed for 1.0-1.3 and autos as the brackets for linkages were missing but internally they're the same

Hi, checked for boots getting caught. I do get more movement one way. I took it back to garage who have told me the rack needs to be centralised! I think they are wrong!!

they are not wrong you should have the same amont of turn/lock in both directions

The length of the track rods needs to be adjusted accurately before the rack is fitted. To set the tracking you adjust the offside only. I would take it back to the garage and ask them about it.

I fitted an aftermarket rack once that had no where near as much travel as an OEM one.

Hi, I have a mechanic putting my Mk1 Golf through the MoT and he says it needs a new steering rack. Where did you get yours from and now much did it cost?

I have heard it can be as much as ?150.  If that is true then the bill for getting this through the MoT might be so high that I have to let them keep the car as payment.  It's been in their garage for so long with wheel bearings, exhaust, structural welding and brake repair all being done to try and make it road worthy.  I am worried that the bill might run as high as ?600+ which is about what the car is worth!!!
