steering gremlin

scary at times!

ive had my latest golf (84 gti cabby) for less than a week but one problem area that was evident on the test drive and has become even more apparent since is a rather slack front end. the car is running on new 15's (tyres too) and supersport coilovers and according to a receipt has has a recent geometry check. it feels very vague and boaty in the corners and compared to my old '80 gli cabby and even my caddy (which ran on 205/14's) , it seems to need an awfull lot of lock to get it through corners. until i can get an extra pair of hands to assist in a proper inspection , my guess is possibly wishbone woes? there are no particularly worrying noises when driving or rocking the steering wheel when stationary but out on the road the "slack" becomes evident. if driving on a straight with the steering wheel straight if you come out of a right hand corner the steering wheel will somerimes sit to the right by quite a large degree and the same to the left too. i had quite a hairy moment on one of my favourate local corners earlier and i dont really fancy having to valet the drivers seat just yet!! anyone had a similar issue?

Are the rack mounts still firmly attached to the body shell/chassis.?

Yea sounds like your steering rack has come adrift!

i suppose that is the logical explanation….i can feel some scraped knuckles coming on! going to be wierd squeezing under a lowered mk1 after 5 years of running a +3" lifted suzuki samirai. i can swap out the gearbox on that without even thinking about dusting the jack off!

that pesky gremlin has been tracked down!  it would seem that the o/s rack mount no longer wishes to be associated with the rest of the shell. so , its going to be out with the magic wand at the weekend and re-unite the two. hopefully that should prevent any further bum-clenchers!!

does anyone have any details on whats involved here ie what needs to be removed to get in there, or any pics of yours broken/fixed ?

Had a good look today, yep def. got detatched rack mount syndrome
looks like I`ll be removing the front carpet, exhaust fr. pipe and the stg rack
luckily?? it just seems to be broken welds rather than any tinworm so prob not too bad really. downside is that I wanted to have a bit of a drive out in it over the bank holiday and I`m not gonna get time to do it now for around 3/4 weeks.
on the plus side, there will be another payday between now and then so I`ll prob renew the rack while it`s undone cos the one on there looks a bit too crusty.
the apprentice did give it a bit of a buff up today though so not all bad

i'm hoping to do a side at a time (bush off , weld up ,bush on) without removing too much else. thats the plan anyway!

did you manage to get this done yet ? I`m just in the process of doing mine…it`s currently sat on a ramp in work minus it`s stg rack, bottom arms, exhaust and gear linkage :(I`ll try get some pics of it.
on the bright side I`m doing it in work although it`s a bit at a time due to half hour lunch breaks and I do have some nice new bits to go back on :)…wallet has taken a bit of a hiding though……shhhh, don`t tell mrs cabfan ;)
