Starter motor bolts?
On my way to work this morning and stopped at the local shop. When I got back the mk1, it wouldnt turn over. So I popped the bonnet and had a look.
Well, you can imagine my face when I saw that the starter motor was hanging out of the gearbox! 8O 8O 8O
Quickly grabbed the socket set out of the boot and started to bolt it back on, but there was only 1 bolt left in it.
I've had a look in my bentley manual and it just refers to "the bolts" when taking the stater motor out. Is there supposed to be 2 or 3 bolts that hold it on?
Any one got any spares or know what size to get? Maybe what other VW's have the same bolts so I can go hunting in the scrap yards?
Cheers peeps

I think one is longer, I could be wrong though.

pretty sure they're the same length, it may be the thread has gone on your front engine mount bracket or the engine dropped when the bolt fell out so you'll have to get a jack under it before you can bolt it back together. dont drive it anymore till fixed as those bolts also hold the front engine mount bracket to the engine!!

Popped in to B&Q on the way across town earlier, managed to pick up an M10 x150mm for £1.38! It's actually a tad long, the M10 x 135mm would have been spot on for both.
When I tried to fit it though, there wasn't a captive nut on the bottom hole of the front engine mount? Is there supposed to be? Do you recon this is why i was missing the bottom bolt? Anyway, used a nyloc nut instead and it's all sorted now.
And a bonus, whilst I was in B&Q I picked up a mini ratchet for £4!
Happy days

yeah there should be a threaded nut welded to the bottom mount hole, if its sheared off that'll be why. a std M10 self-locking nut will sort you out in the mean time
