Speedo cable/gear box

Hi there,
I've just bought a mk1 Caddy with a 1.6 driver and 4 speed box.

After buying it i realised the speedo wasn't working. Upon checking the cable was knackered so bought a new ne from GSF and tried fitting it last night.
I've not done anything with these engines before and am not a mechanic…. The old one came out fine, probably as the bolt wasn't tight and i don't think its the right one.

Should the end of the speedo cable that goes into the gear box actually locate into something? There doesn't seen to be anything inside that it sits in. The only thing i can feel inside is a threaded shaft which is to the front.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated…. Theres too many speed cameras around to not have a working speedo!

think its just a case of wiggling it until it goes in, i have refitted mine a few times and sometimes it has dropped straight in and other times its needed a bit of a wiggle/turning slighly .. there may be a better way of doing it but thats what i know from my experience ..

Thanks for that. i've had a quick look in an old Haynes manual i had for a Sciroco i had.

Looks like im missing the part that clips to it and has a cog on. I'll have to check to see if its floating around in there to make sure it doesn't do any damage…

make sure you dont forget to fit the circlip on the end of the cable, if you dont then you loose the gear in the box

its chep from vw if the old cable doesnt have it. then once the gear is fitted its a case of drop it in then wiggle it around till the nipple on the end of the gear locates into the hole in the bottom of the gearbox casting. its fiddly!

The gear was missing from the old one so I'm guessing it's in the bottom sOmewhere.. If I can't find it or if it's not there is it something I can get from GSF or am I going to have to go to VW?

think this one is vw or ebay purchase, main thing is you need to get the right one to match the box. can you get the code off the bottom of the bellhousing?

Yes I should be able to.. I'll have to see how easy it is to jack up as it's quite low…
I'll put the code on here once I've done it.
Might not be today tho as I'm a bit delicate after crashing my bike and breaking a rib!
