Some help needed from owners of Mk1's with coilovers........

Hi all, it's been quiote a while since I even logged on here as I haven't owned a mk1 in any form for several years. Anyway I'm now in need of some help from you Mk1 owners and I'm hoping that those of you with long memories who I may have helped in the past can find time to return the favour.

I now own a Porsche 924 and as some of you may know the front suspension is remarkably similar in design to a mk1 Golf and I intend to try adapting mk1 Golf coilovers to fit. My problem is that I've had no joy in finding even one unit cheap enough to play around with so now find myself trying to work this out in theory rather than practice, so I'm hoping you guys would be able to provide some information to help.

Below are four questions that will help me ascertain whether the mk1 units would be suitable. If possible please could you reply to each in this thread.

1. What is the length of the strut at full extension from the shoulder just below the thread at the top of the shaft to the lower hole for the hub upright bolt? or if fitted from the top spring plate to the lower hole for the hub upright bolt? (please specify which measurement you give)
2. Approximately how much does the spring (or springs if there is a helper) compress in length when it takes the weight of the car?
3. If known - Is the shock absorber unit and insert (thus replaceable) or part of the strut (not replaceable)
4. What brand of coilovers do you have?

I know that this is kind of technical, but if it could be left in this section to get some exposure I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks, Stew.
