Slipping clutch

Got GTI back on road after a couple of weeks maintenance only to find the clutch is slipping 8O . Most noticeable when accelerating hard at speed or up a hill. Clutch was replaced about a year ago, cable has free play in it - totally mystified. Was fine when I previously drove car a couple of weeks ago, any ideas :dontknow: .

Looks like cable may be sticking when clutch pedal is released. Moving cable when removing manifolds has disturbed its position. There is a bit of rust around cable hole in bulkhead and the metal has a 2-3mm split in the corner of the opening. Have got a self-adhesive repair panel. How effective are these? They appear to just stick on which doesn't seem very heavy duty?

hi mate had the same problem with mine. got old that the clutch that was in there wasnt durable enough, although mine has been tuned and some engine components changed. i had a super sport heavy duty clutch put in and its ace mate hope this helps...................mickeym

Bulkhead plates work really well and will sort the problem

I'm not sure if adding the repair plate will cure your prob ….when pressing the clutch pedal, you are pulling on the cable inner so I would think the opposite is true…ie the clutch will not slip, it will not release properly so you would be crunching your gears.  If you are going to add this repair panel (not a bad idea ) however, while you have the cable out, force some lubricant up/down its chuff so you know it is free!  imo clutch will only slip if :

It is worn out (unlikely after only 12 months use)

The pressure plate is worn out (should've been replaced with clutch plate)

The flyheel is scored to B*ggery (would've been check as above) and has
kn*ckered the new plate already


it has too LITTLE free play (the easiest and cheapest condition to fix)

the cable is too stiff (and not letting the plate engage properly)

or

(OUCH!) there is oil on the plate hopefully not caused by a cr*ppy crankshaft oil seal.  In the latter case you would probably see oil dripping from below

could be an oil leak from the nose of the gearbox shaft

Cheers, I'm going to clean up bulkhead opening and fit repair panel as a precautionary measure anyway - i'll clean up and refit cable and see what happens. Car leaves no oil when parked and nothing or dripping from car/gearbox. Now got a misfire problem so got to sort that before looking at clutch further .

Theres a tiny little o ring that goes around the shaft which goes into the gearbox.

If this wasn't replaced it eventually Pi$$es gearbox oil all over your nice new clutch.
