I'm no mechanic, but the rumbling going off when you turn one way fits in with a wheel bearing going. The clicking could be a CV joint (especially noticeable when cornering slowly?) - I've had one bust completely and spill out ball bearings shortly after that symptom! Hopefully someone else will add their opinion though.

I also am not a mechanic but I would guess the rumbling is your nearside front whel bearing and the click is one of the outer CV's. Usually with CV problems the outer's click when turning and the inner's give vibration through the car.

I had exactly the same problem on my 8V GTI

Turned out to be the Inner drivers side CV joint . If it goes away when you free wheel the car ? Usually CV joint inner or outer .

The front bearings I've had trouble with have rumbled more with the weight off them and then been virtually silent when the weight is on them. I would guess your trouble is the front offside bearing.
