Rumble Rumble Rumble....
Problem is: when driving under load at speed round a left hand bend, I get significant feedback and rumbling through the steering wheel. Everything is absolutely fine when driving sedately in a straight line and in don't seem to get the problem round a right hand bend.
So myself and my mechanic have checked the wheels & tyres and swapped the fronts for completely different sets, have also checked and found no problem with the off side outer cv, wheel bearing, track rod end, lower ball joint etc etc. Still no idea what the problem is.
My mechanic is suspicious the offside inner offside CV is knackered or even the gearbox is on the way out, the latter I find pretty hard to believe, but am open to ideas. I thought sticking a lower strut brace on would stiffen things up a bit in case it is the chassis flexing therefore compressing the drive shafts & gearbox output flanges, although am yet to get one.
Anyone else experienced any thing similar or know what the problem might be?
Thanks…

Not a knackered top mount is it?

It is sometimes very difficult to verify a front wheel bearing. It may have no play or sound rumbly when spun with no load. I had a Mk2 exactly like this. Changed the brearing and it was fine. My money's on a wheel bearing.
To check a CV joint put the car on full lock and drive around in a circle slowly. If you hear a load clicking sound then the CV joint is on it's way out.

I'd agree with CQ, that it's most likely a front wheel bearing - rumbling on corners, due to side-load on a knackered bearing.
However, you won't be able to hear/feel anything with the car jacked up, as there is no way that you can put the kind of side-load on the hub with your hands, as it gets when driving.
It could also be a CV joint, but less likely. If you're feeling energetic, you can disassemble the CV joints for a look (can't do this to the hub bearings).
How many miles are on the car, and do you know if the CVs or hub bearings were ever changed already. Also, did it ever fail an MOT for broken CV boot (implying that the CV joint may have been driven without grease for a period)?

Sounds like wheel bearing. As already said above, CV's 'click'.
Best to replace both front bearings at the same time, I did one, only to have to replace the other 3 weeks later !!!!

I'd guess a wheel bearing too… 8)
Honestly!
I had exactly the same symptoms on my old 1600 GTI.
Cheers,
Drew.

Thanks for the help…. havent had a chance to have it to bits again yet but looks like i'll be swapping out the wheel bearing, defo seems like the most sensible option for now… Got more pressing issues now though - the brake fluid resovoir is consuming vast quantities of brake fluid and i'm yet to have a look and find out where it's going…
Cheers.. - Will post n let you know what the problems were….
