replacment steering rack?

is the late sirroccoco steering rack the same as the mk1 golf?  local scrappers has number of them in and i guessed it would be cheaper to get one off one of those than a recon from GSF. cheers

I would guess it would be the same but honestly I don't know. I would be a little suspect about buying a 2nd hand rack though. Chances are it will be as worn as yours.

If you have play in yours have you tried adjusting the steering gear?? You need to be double jointed but with a 7mm stubby spanner (from memory) and a 17mm one you can adjust quite quickly.

Hi, my mk1s recently started giving me a wobbly steering wheel, tends to be below 40 odd mph. Any suggestions? Wheel balance? or as above says and try the steering gear?

Have the wheels balanced first [cheap] then look at other problems . Normally wheel wobble at high or low speed is associated with wheel balance problems . The rack would not normally give you this .

If you are getting a rack from the breakers, try to get one from a 1.1 or 1.3 car, as they are the same as the bigger-engined cars, but have had an easier life, with narrower tyres, and a lighter engine/gearbox load on them.

But the Gti rack has a bracket welded to it for the gear linkages hasn't it…
Easy to hack the old one off and re-weld on if you are capable, but not everyone is…

I know the bracket - I must check my 1.3 rack to see if it is on all racks - makes sense to put a tiny bracket like that on all of 'em, rather than having two different part numbers, etc (the bracket for the brake compensator is on my 1.3 floorpan, even though it doesn't have one, so hopefully they did the same thing with the racks).
