Basically the stub axles, calipers, etc from a Mk2 Gti mated to Scirocco 16V handbrake cables. By all accounts it's not worth it though. The vast majority of the brake effort is biased towards the front on a Mk1. Biggest improvement will come from bigger disks / better servo / overhauled brake linkage here. Go for Audi calipers mated to late 16V 256mm disks and a Passat / Golf 16V servo plus braided flexi hoses for a good upgrade (be careful when buying calipers though - most won't fit ! - more info elsewhere on this site if you search)

Mine runs standard rear drum set-up, and never had any problems with it. Got the larger/ later servo fitted with dot 5 brake fluid, and it was surprising the difference that thhis made on its own.
Everyone moans about the brakes ont he MK1, but to be honest its down to bad adjustment normally ie the rear brakes not being adjusted up properly which then leads to lots of pedal travel.
Stay with Drums imo.
