Outer cv joints
So i bought a complete new driveshaft with joints from vw some time ago, tried to fit it but the outer joint was too big to fit into the wheel bearing housing :? i was told that you cant get new joints anymore which actualy fit (dont believe this) and that the new joints cant be made to fit, what do you lot do when you need an outer cv? surely i could just phone up gsf and order a pair up that will fit or have they changed over like im told :?

Storm 81, it's a 1600GTI you have if I remember rightly ? As I believe that the 1.6 has smaller CV's the the 1.8. (Use to run a 1.6 GTI and still some spare driveshafts knocking around the garage and am sure they are smaller on the CV's). Would be really surprised if they are obsolete parts.

Yes 1600 gti, part number for the driveshaft is 171 407 271 SX only thing i can think of is that they are using later golf/scirocco outer joints, think the mk2 scirocco and cabby had different wheel bearing housings from a set date which could explain things

Sorry I can't help in new parts. I used to recondition cv joints for a living a few years back here in Australia. I found that most can easily be reconditioned with the right tools. I did my own set up when I had a golf back then and found that they worked well. The "groove's" in the housing and race need to be smoothed out, bigger ball bearings and a new cage fitted. If you have them over there I wouldn't discount getting a set that had been rebuilt or sourcing some second hand ones you could have done. OK it's not new but if they know what they are doing they will be just as good
