mk1 golf gti gearbox prob

Hi i have a 1600 mk1 golf gti and i think the gearbox has a problem. When i drive around 30mph i can hear a kind of whinging noise but its very slight. The gearbox is quite sloppy but no crutchs or anything. I think its the original gearbox too (but i doubt that being 25yrs old). Is there anyway of telling if it def the gearbox or what else could cause that sound(only above about 30 is it audible)? cheers

Tommy is the noise still there when you free wheel down a hill in neutral ?

Good test to see if its the gear box or something else  :dontknow: #

Keep us posted …cheers …….

When you say the gearbox is sloppy, do you mean the gearchange? How can a gearbox itself be sloppy? Or could it be the clutch? Or the synchromech (slow or crunchy changes when cold, typically 1st to 2nd)?

Worn gearbox linkage is a common issue and you can buy an inexpensive kit to replace the wearing parts and make it much better.

Hi again by sloppy i mean then gearchange. There does not seem to be any problem getting into any gear abit stiff when cold but loosens up. and the clutch seems fine. Its just a slight whinge when geting up some speed and now a squeek when going into first . I looked into it abit 2day and heard something about the linkage kit which could improve the movement etc of the gearchange but its the whine thats bothering me. could a wheel bearing make that sound?i will try the downhill method and get back to u?

cheers guys

If its a kind of squeeking and is worse going round corners it could well be a wheel bearing.  I've had several go over the years

At least you can physically look at the wheel bearing, to see if it is likely to be the culprit. If the noise changes with different gears, its the gearbox. My money is on the box being at fault here.

replace the gear linkage bushes and change the gearbox oil youd be suprised waht a difference that can make

Hi guys thanks for all ur responses. I tryed the down hill method and took it out of gear and i could still hear it. what could  that mean? i will check the fluid at the weekend and try and get hold of the linkage kit. and if poss a wheel bearing check

Cheers

I'd suspect the wheel bearings, but I can't be sure over the internet, I'd need to look at the car.

I'd agree whining is most likely wheel bearing do the following to check, jack the car up grab top and bottom of wheel, if it waggles then its the wheel bearing, to double check get someone to put the foot brake on an try again. If the wheel stops waggling it is the wheel bearing, if it still moves you've found play in the suspension.

If the gearbox is making the noise do change the oil, and if it still going on use an additive like STP which does help quieten things down until you have time to change it/source another.
