Mk1 Gearbox
My campaign has a mk2 box in it, I want to replace it with a mk1 box so I can get my MPG gauge and change-up indicator working again and the MFA reading correctly.
Should the mk1 box have a certain type of reverse light switch that also makes MPG gauge work? :dontknow:
If so, can you tell me what it looks like as there a couple of VW places in the area that I'm going to check out for a 2nd hand box but I want to make sure I get the right box.
Or is it possible to tell from the gearbox code?
thanks

I'd consider putting any good condition box from a mk1 gti as the 9A will probably be harder to come across.
That's why I wanted to know what the switch looked like, so it would help me tell if it was out of a mk1 or not.
Do you know the codes for 'normal' gti boxes by any chance? or are there so many different codes it's too hard to tell

Only the Golf Mk1 9A box has the correct MFA block on the top. The scirocco had one and I guess the MK2 also.
The normal reverse light switch is two connections and screws into the top of the box. The MFA one is a block that bolts sideways on the top of the box with an 8 pin connector block I think.
I have a 9A box if you want one.
Cheers

Just been reading this old thread. I wonder if anyone can help me please…
My reverse lights don't work - or rather they're on all the time. (so I've taken the bulbs out.)
I got myself a new reverse lights switch from Eurocarparts, but the one they given me is a 2-pin screw-in switch, and looking at the top of my gearbox it looks like the connector is a rectangular one that pushes in sideways??? Do I have a newer gearbox that needs a different sort of switch, ie. the 9A box? Eurocarparts didn't give me an option on the switch - the 2-pin screw-in one apparently is the correct one for my car. :dontknow:

Might be correct for the car but not the box - probably been changed.
You need the MFA type switch - not available for the MK1 new but you can use a MK2 one by switching a couple of wires.
I have used MK1 ones (need testing) and a new Mk2 one I think
Cheers

I can confirm that the 9A gearbox was fitted in mk2's - certainly in my old 1984 car (now long gone). It had an MPG gauge + the gearchange indicator lamp in the dash.
