MK1 clipper Gear box replacements ?
Hi all.
I recently purchased my first MK1 Clipper (1989 1.8).
Like many people on here I had the popping out of 5th gear problem. I ended up having to drive home after buying it from High Wycombe to Glasgow in 4th gear and took me 13 hours !!!!!!!!
Anyway, got up that day after a few hours sleep and it is now stuck in a (unable to go anywhere) gear and I have been unable to drive it since
Does anyone know which other gearboxes are compatible (it is a 1.8 manual 5 speed) ?
I have no technical or mechanical knowledge at all :dontknow:
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi there, I don't have much mechanical knowledge myself, but I've been told that any year VW scirrocco will fit. As long as it's a 1.8 that is. I've got an auto 1.8 Clipper myself, & possible winter project is changing it to a manual. So while asking about, I've been told all parts from any year 1.8 scirrocco will do. I was also told if you can get hold of an old montego or maestro that it would do as well but the gearing is supposed to be crap.

Beware of 16V gearboxes. They have a different diameter input shaft than the 8V box, so unless you get a 16V clutch to go with it, it won't fit. I know, because I once spent an hour trying to fit one myself!
