Lower Control arm bushes

Hi, replacing the lower control arm, bought a new one but now trying to remove the rubber bushes to fit on the new arm.
Cant figure out how to remove them, they are tight. Please any advice on removing these rubber bushes.

I am going to replace both wishbones, but judging by the amount of force that is required to get the new bushes in the new wishbone I would say getting them out/off without destroying them is near impossible.
Since they are not that expensive this might just be a good time to replace them anyway.

Can I just ask, is it a must to replace the arm as well? I'm trying to cut costs at the moment and i'm wondering if i could get away with just changing the bushes on my 82 gti…

???

Thanks n advance

As long as the wishbone is not damaged or severely rusted I don't see why you should replace it. Some people (like me) just like to put shiny new parts on their cars even if it is not necessary. It's like giving jewelry to a beautiful woman  8)

I don't think my wishbones are damaged or severely rusted but i will have a closer look though..

I think we men (and women) are all alike…who doesn't like to put new shiny parts on their cars?

I'll have to disagree with ur comment abt giving jewellery to a beautiful woman…It's NOT like that at all me thinks. Y'see, when WE put shiny new parts on our cars, it makes US happy. When we give beautiful women jewellery, it make THEM happy. Does it make US happy? We're happy to see them happy, but i think there is that voice in our heads saying " Hmm, i could've bought new rims or coilovers with what I paid for that necklace…"

Just a thought, no offence to anyone…

If you have access to a press the job can be done in very little time and cheaply. why fit new arms if they are perfectly fine?

Dont even need a press, warm bush up in hot water to make it more pliable then drop of correct lubricant, long bolt with nut ,a socket and washer.

i buy as new arm, balljoint, and bushes, press the bushes in,fit balljoint then just fit the complete arm, like most modern cars these days, just fit the lot,and im not one for putting 25 year old balljoints back on once theyve been removed with force or a splitter for what they cost for a quality replacement

Guys, I am re-useing my arms as there is little wrong with them was just gonna wire wheel and black them.

Got all new bushes and ball joints but how the hell do you get the back bush out, and in. Does this have to be done in a press ?

Cheers Kenno

You can cut the metal out with saw, or drill around it and push it out, then burn the rest out with oxy acet, or just continue with a saw. Don't cut too far or you WILL need a new arm.

Get medieval on it

What about getting the new bush in

Just like all places, the replacement parts aren't that expensive.  Arms with the bushes = 1 tank of fuel.  And how long does that last.

A internet price for Febi

But you can get them from loads of places

Thats how i justify every purchase. Base it on a tank of fuel and think how long a tank lasts… :D

Thanks I know that now, but I have already bought all the bushes seperate from vw spares, and my arms are fine. But to be honest if I had seen that full arm kit before buying the bushes seperate I would of bought them.

Which still leaves me with the question do the bushes need to be pressed into the arm

Not tried yet, but can't you just put it in a vice and slowly apply the pressure by closing it?

If they are the poly type bushes, they should just push in by hand with a good greasing.  I've no experience with renewing standard ones, but why would you want to?
