Lower Balljoint difference

Hi

I went to replace the balljoint on the drivers side wish bone, The GSF part would not fit into the hub after many hours  of trying.
Before I had  replaced the passenger side balljoint with the same  GSF part with no problems.

So I measured the Diameter of the ball joint and found it to be 15mm drivers side and 16mm passenger side

The left is driver and the right is passenger.

The picture above is the back of the hub, Does anyone know the correct part for this hub, and why there would be a difference?

1mm ? Why not just simple open up the lower ball joint holder with a suitable item . All hubs are the same on the MK1 , the clamp bolt can be tightened to such a degree that a new item will not fit unless you open it up using a suitable tool . This is common practice . Chisel , pri bar etc inserted will give sufficient leverage .

Hope this helps …………

What year is the car or specifically the hub carriers? Early cars use 15mm ball joints, later use 17mm.

I did try the Pri bar and chisel also letting the car drop onto the wishbone with a block of wood underneath to try and force in it.  It was very head wrecking.

My car is an 83 but maybe at some point in its life the hub was changed on the drivers side back to the old type, I didnt know this.

Do you think CrazyQuiff would carry this earlier part? Around lunch tommorow I will call in to my local gsf and see what other ball joints they have and I have my verniers with me.

Cheers Ed
