why not put the old ones back on ? just get some mole grips and loosed them until the grib both sides of the strap, the tighten them with the screw as much as you can and then close the mole grips properly, you should then be able to get the clip started on the end, hammer it on until it hits the mole gribs remove grips and move to the very end of the clamp and tighten again, then hammer clip on until they hit grips again, remove grips hammer clip the last bit then bend the tab over .. job done

I picked up 2 sets of these Beetle ARB mounts kits at the weekend. I need to get under the car and check the larger ones will fit but if they do I'll get in touch with the seller as he told me he has quite a few NOS sets.
I'll check this weekend and give him a call.

OK, I have recently retrofitted ARBs to my Golf GL. When I got the ARBs, the rear mountings did not come with them, so I tried the same route as you.
I fear that the beetle ones will not fit, they are too small. The ones I bought were.
I purchased a Mk1 pair from CQs and though initially I had trouble fitting them, some advice from a number of members solved the problem and they are now fitted. See my project link
I used two pair of molegrips in sequence to tighten a clamp before sliding the lock on with a small hammer.
Though at just under £40 a pair incl P&P, they are made from stainless steel, nice and shiney, do not need painting and should last a lifetime.
The only other source is CHUBNUTT on Ebay @ nearly £35 for one incl P&P.
Hope this helps
