there are gear linkage bush/rod kits on ebay the full kit is about £21 but if your rods are ok the bush kit is less than a tenner i got one recently and just had a look and they still on ebay. Personally id replace the whole lot as it stiffens up your gear changes quite a lot and the guide is very good im a novice with working on my car and i found it quite easy to do myself

Hi - I am looking to get a Gear Linkage Repair Kit from GSF for my 1989 Cab 1.8 as I can no longer engage 5th gear.
GSF does not list the part for a 1.8 Mk1 Cab.
GSF lists the following -
M1 711VG0070 £13.50
or
M2 711VG0080 G2 1.6/1.8 83> £5.75
Can anyone confirm which kit I should get?
Thanks for your help - Rob.

no idea mate the ones on ebay have no such numbers on them but work on everyones car that ive heard of so far, mines a 1.8 cabby n it sorted mine altho looking at the prices it looks like one is for the linkage rods (13 quid sounds about right) n the other could be for the plastic bushes so if thats the case it depends which bits you need :dontknow:

Cheers Jay-
I will have a look on E-bay tonight (blocked at work!), hoping I only need the bush replacement kit. Going to stick my head under the car tonight & have a good luck now that it has finally stopped raining in York!
Ta Rob.

I done the gear linkage ages ago and got them from a guy called lesbrey or something on ebay. Worked a treat but don't forget to mark up where the splines sit at the front. I had to do the measuring under the gearstick to get it right but yeah its easy and a good way to get started. I went on from that to rebuilding my 1.8gti engine and put a guide on here how to do it…. buy linkage kick on ebay and try it :dontknow:

After further inspection I discovered that my gearbox is finished (rattling like mad in neutral & no 5th gear, assume the rattle is the gear itself flying about in the box).
Now looking to buy a 2nd hand replacement.

i ordered my gear linkage kit from crazyquiffs last year. i ordered the bush kit and the long and short link, and then got a local garage to fit them, cost about an hours labour

has definitely helped smooth out the change between 1st and 2nd gear, as mine was crunching horribly
