Gear selection difficulty.

My son has a 1990 1800 Golf. Over the past few weeks it has become more and more difficult to select gears. We replaced all the bushes and links and it has not improved.

Today we removed the linkages at the gearbox selector and found that its difficult to select any gear using the selector on the gearbox. It is definitely not a clutch problem. It appears to be an internal selector problem with the gearbox.

I have never worked on a Golf gearbox before and would like to know what the problem could be and it there are spares available to repair or would it be easier to replace the gearbox.

1st thing id try is fresh oil, but it may be the clutch is starting to go?
