Geabox drive shaft oil seals/gearbox identity

Hi all,

My 82 mk1 1.6 gti is losing gear oil thru the drive shaft seals, any idea what seals I am after? It's a 5 speed box.

VW TPS say they may be able to help me but I need to know my gearbox id code, any idea where I should be looking ?

Also, I find 1st hard to select sometimes, I have to mess with the reverse gate to get it in, it had a clutch fitted before I got the car, is the gate adjustable on the bar when it joins the selector mechanism at the bottom of the bulkhead ?

I remember some other older cars having a similar problem with miss-alignment if you diddn't get it just right.

I have fitted a bush and rod kit from quiffs and change is nice and smooth otherwise.

Thanks !

you have a 020 gearbox , gear selection could be low or poor gear oil, bushings worn (but youve changed) or the likely candidate adjustment, if none of that works the box is knackered. i got fed up with the porridge sterring gear knob and just put a 02j mk4 golf box on, but then again i have a 20vt. my guff is a '82 gti and was a 1.6 snappppp !!!

I have a rose jointed weighted gear linkage which I have no problem getting first gear even when moving. Used to have to more or less stop!
Gearbox code is / should be on a small flat part at the bottom of the gearbox close to the engine, normally 6 characters long. You need the last two e.g. FD is close ratio 1.6 gti
seal just depends on flange size so 90 or 100mm, I would highly recommend getting new seal seal housing/flanges as the seal can get hot and melt to the he and then not seal properly.
Its the part were the seal sits against.

I have an "FD" box as possle thought, any idea where best to get the drive shaft seals from ?

Cant see them on gsf, ecp or vw heritage.

Gsf (about £9 for a swap kit) or vag. Il check tomoz to see of vw still have any (I work at a 2dealer)
Just make sure that the outer part of the seal, as in the parts that touchs the green sleeve is 100% free of dirt and old rubber as they will leak.
Going from a rushed previous try!

I have a small bodyshop so know the lads at the local VW TPS, they have said i need the date off the top off the box as it changed on that year, if it's the later box they have stock at vw if its earlier it's discontinued - I have the part number they gave me at work for the one in stock, any idea if mine is the later one ?

He said they dont sell the seal but a repair kit that retails at £22, hopefully this includes everything i need.

Does it have the green sleeves?
Welcome to BrokeVW.com
Scroll down to flange R+R, then down to find the flange quide which explains weather it needs new or old style seals

Mine has green sleeves on both the passenger and drivers side so like you say according to that link I am defo on new seals, gonna bite the bullet and buy a pair tommorow, he said i will get them for £18 quid each plus vat including my discount - does that sound ok ?

Yeah, I never bought vw ones but can have a loom tomoz anyway, if its cheaper than full retail then get them

you get both seals in the kit from vw, i did mine when i swapped some 100mm flanges.

adjusting the gear linkage is easy, in N undo the 1 bolt on the splined end of the shaft under the car, then adjust the finger on the lever end so that it is 19mm from the reverse stop and central to it. you can adjust the lever in the cab by 2 10mm bolts but only has sideways adjustment
