Engine mounts
I am needing to purchase a left side engine mount, ie the one which supports the transmission. There are 3 available from VW:
171 199 214 J - auto, cabby
171 199 214 D - 4 speed
171 199 214 H - 5 speed, diesel
Which one is the strongest?
Here's a pic, its number 4 in the diagram:

I think the general opinion is that the diesel ones are strongest.

That's what my thoughts were too, but I'm thinking perhaps the auto one is stronger, since the auto is much heavier than a manual transmission. I can't see why a cabby one would be the same as an auto one (stronger), though, unless its actually softer (less vibration into the car) or something to do with the exhaust system, which is different on a cabby I think?

I'd go for the 171 199 214 H which is the standard part for the GTI. At least you'll know it'll fit. Its not normally that mount that goes, its either the rear or engine side mount that I've seen go.

I have a FBH which, after a lot of use, got the old one out. Are you sure the diesel one is stronger than the auto one?

Its the rear mount that people change for a diesel one isnt it? Thats what I did anyway and went for standard mounts elsewhere.

I've searched around and I've not (yet) found anyone that does uprated engine mounts for the Mk1. It seems that its too old, these days.
I know about the rear diesel mount - there's 2 available, the regular one (171 399 151A) and the diesel (171 399 151B). I'm specifically asking about the 3 varieties of left engine mount available from VW, though.
ie Is the auto/cabby one stronger, or weaker, than the diesel/5 speed one?

Do you have a phone number or web address for a UK Distributor? I looked at their website, downloaded their catalogue and I could only see air cooled parts, etc. BBT used to do them but when I went to their website I couldn't find any details.

Get your cheque book out, or buy a welder and fabricate your own. It would work out cheaper.

I got mine from BBT, about a year or so ago. Would be worth phoning them to see if they still do them?

and those ones from g-werkes are for fitting a cable change box to a mk1

What ones did you go for in the end paul?

I think I phoned up BBT and they did the Bugpack ones, contrary to what it says on their website. I can vouch for them, they work well and hold the engine steady in its intended place.
