Hi the second gear on these boxes is weak and the conditions you encounter are normal when its worn . Replacement or rebuild is the only way to cure permanantly . Be carefull where you buy your box as some may have been removed for this reason years ago and then turn up on Ebay at a bargain price . 8O
Temp measure would be to change the gear box oil for good synthetic stuff and chuck one of those additives in for worn gears -Halfords and the like sell all sorts- this may give a temp cure :dontknow: Till you replace the box .
Cheers……

as soon as it warms up there is no crunching - guess it is on the way out though. Is there another fix if not too far gone?
Or if it is the case of a recondition/replacement - how much would that cost

My gearbox was exactly the same as yours, and eventually it went, and I hadn't even looked at the gearbox oil level in 10 years - very very naughty boy I know.
For info, I found a late cabby gearbox with low miles, and as long as you use the cabby driveshafts there's no other differences.
good luck all
