clutch problems

right then im in the process of rebuilding my gti cabrio  8)

when i had the engine out i renewed the clutch, the engine and gearbox are back in and im slowly cracking on so tonight i fitted the clutch cable and pedal

however theres nothing on the pedal it just sinks to the floor  :evil:  i disconnected the cable a the g/box end and the release pawl just lifts up with little or no resistance, so what do you reckon??

i was thinking release bearing?? or pushrod???

how hard are these to change with the gearbox in situe  :dontknow:

or do i need to take the g/box out again  :evil:  :evil:  :dontknow:

or is there some kind of adjustment that i need to make??

I think you incorectly fitted the release bearing to the clutch shaft . thats why your cable has no resistance .  8O

Looks like it will have to come off again .

i never changed the release bearing (its in the back of the box)  :dontknow:

not much resistance is normal……Is the cable installed correctly ie. is it short enough to actuate the lever with the pedal ….GSF sell fitting kits with rubber mounts to ensure there is correct tension in the cable….

Mine was the same and thought it was the bearing but the cable just needed tightening…(ie. I didn't have enough of the rubber blocks to put the correct tension on) would try playing with this before looking at the release bearing…..

ive been and checked the clutch cable and its not that with the release arm on the side of the gearbox as high as it will go (nearly touching the clutch cable support above it) its still not releasing the clutch

so what next anybody?????

Yo,did you put the push rod in???
did you put the center plate of the clutch in (held in with a circular springy clip)

im not to sure, but can the release bearings come of when ur wiggiling the box to get it on?? just a fort as it does sound like the release bearings dropd of or not situated properly.

The thrust bearing is behind the green plate on the end of the gearbox,so it cant go anywhere,the pushrod rests on the bearing and then pushes on the center of the clutch release plate to disengage it.
I have had a few pushrods wear through the release plate on older clutches without the hardened tit in the middle,these are rare now though

the push rod is in there and the plate was centerd its a brand new clutch with 0 miles on it as im still in the re-building phase of the car and not the drivin phase yet     :cry:


looks like im gonna have to lower the box so i can take out the release bearing  

I will be honest here,i have never changed a thrust bearing in a rover or a vw,they never go,they are always swiming in oil,i changed my citigolf bearing just because i had the box in bits cleaning it

I had the clutch release arm shear off on my old Mk2 polo a few years back, but you couldn't tell what had happened until you had the whole thing apart.
