clutch advice needed!

iv recently changed my 1.1 engine for a later 1.3 engine and now its all back in the clutch fork is really stiff, also..
    when the engine is running and clutch is pushed down i try to select a gear and  it stalls the engine.
     when the engine is not running it will select the gears.

is this gunna be a gearbox back out job?? any advice would be much appreaciated.

Matt, on the small engine Golf's the fork is held in place by a plastic sleave type of 'bearing', this may have seized up. I can't remember if you can gain access to remove the fork, re-grease and replace without having to remove the box again but it could be down to this - try squirting WD40 or better still spray grease down the fork hole into the box. Failing this try removing the cable and make sure it is free and doesn't have any tight turns which could hamper it's movement.

nope,still no good. iv taken the cable off and the fork moves a little bit and then wont go any further.  :dontknow:

Matt,If the clutch is not operating correctly in can either be the release
bearing has come off the fork,clutch pressure plate is the wrong way round, or the cutch cable is to slack and is not pulling the clutch fork enough.

sorry if this is a stupid question but is the release bearing the same thing as the fork bearing that was mentioned earlier? sorry if these are daft questions but i havnt had to work on a gear box before.

Yes the release bearing is the same as clutch fork bearing, this slides over the plastic sleeve thats bolted to the inside of the gearbox. The release bearing only clips on to the clutch fork and can come off when puting the box back on.

ok, thanks for all the help. il just grin and bare it and take the box off again    hopfully this will be the last job before its all finished!
